Rape - do you ever really get over it?

I'm particularly interested to hear from survivors of rape/sexual assault who can speak from personal experience.

Have you been able to gain genuine enjoyment and pleasure from life again? Do the times of pleasure and happiness outweigh those of anguish and despair? Are you able to laugh and interact honestly with other people, without always feeling a gut wrenching pain deep inside?

I've received ongoing professional help for several years. I know that healing is a long process, but lately I've been wondering if it ever truly happens at all. Sometimes I can feel happy, but it never lasts and the pain is never completely gone. It's always there. Happiness is more like a brief, momentary distraction from the pain.

Is it possible that my experience has given me a new awareness and realisation about the world, myself and other people; and is it now impossible to erase this knowledge?

It never goes away-but you don't have to let it rule your life. Sure, there are times when any rape/assault victim feels lonely, their heart hearts, but let me tell you something I heard that made me look at it from a new perspective:

"if you continue to let yourself live in despair and agony, your rapist/assaulter will have gotten what they wanted--they will have taken a piece of you as well as your life. don't be the victim-be the one who overcomes."

Instead of letting it rule over, simply say, it's part of my life, and I have to live with that which will be painful--but I can come out on the other side.

It is not possible to erase the experience, but it is possible to put it away or repress it. Assault generally tends to make the victims more conscientious of their surroundings, observing other males (or if you were assaulted by females-females), being more jumpy or agitated when someone touches you, etc.

Let yourself keep your head up high and continue on with professional help.
