Would it be possible to put aftermarket tail pipes on cars with filter to eliminate air pollution?
They put on aftermarket exhaust systems to make a car perform better, so wouldn't it make a lot of sense to do the same thing with exhaust systems with filters that remove all pollutants? I think that would be the best way to eliminate air pollution without having to get rid of all the old cars on the road. What do you guys think? Would this work? how could we impliment it? It wouldn't even have to interfere with the gas companies so it's seems like a win win for everyone?
It isn't possible. A filter will get clogged very quickly and severely restrict the ability of the engine to vent exhaust gasses making the engine less effecient and reducing the lifespan of the engine. They already include a catalytic converter that causes a chemical reaction to neutralize many of the pollutants before they leave but nothing will ever be able to remove 100%. You might as well just weld your tailpipe shut and see how long your engine lasts.
Taking the old cars off the road isn't a fair solution either. Say you have a nice car that you maintain well and drive infrequently. Though it gets older in years - it still has low mileage and few problems... Now imagine someone telling you that you can't drive anymore because it has passed it's expiration date so you just have to take it to the junkyard.
Does it benefit the environment to throw out perfectly good cars instead of just making sure they run properly?
They already have mandatory emission testing.
