Is there such thing as a bike stand that will allow me to "ride" my bike indoors?
Rather than purchase a costly and bulky exercises cycle I was wondering if there is such thing as a bike rack that will allow me to ride indoors? I'm sure that I've seen them but I'm not sure if the ones I've seen have been just for repairs and not vigorous indoor riding. What exactly do I search for on the web? So far I've come up empty!
The stand you want is called an indoor trainer. You can get them new for about US $150 and up. Every online bike catalogue has lots to choose from.
Here are some shopping hints: The fluid resistance units are the quietest and smoothest. All trainers wear down the rear tire quite quickly, so put a really cheap slick tire on the back of your bike, especially if you have a mountain bike with knobby tires. If your bike has a rear quick release, make sure the trainer comes with a stainless steel skewer to replace the lighter one that's on your bike because trainers put additional strain on the rear skewer. You will sweat a lot when riding indoors because there's no breeze. Sweat is corrosive to your bike and components, so get some kind of sweat guard to protect things. Finally, indoor training can be boring. I go to the library and get books on CD, transcribing them to my iPod. Some people watch TV, but I personally find that too mind numbing. I also read while riding indoors, but after about 30 minutes my glasses fog up.
