Set Oxygen
Set Oxygen

In the preparation of oxygen, why the stoppered test tube be set upward?
Assuming you are using potassium chlorate or pot chlorate and manganese dioxide. The simple answer is that if you set the tube downwards, the reactants may melt or fall and block the exit delivery tube. Gas would build up unable to excape and there could be an explosion. The other reason is that hot potassium chlorate will set fire to almost anything that is combustiable and the cork or bung in the tube will catch fire! Then you don't get oxygen!
