Sandblaster Abrasive
Sandblaster Abrasive

I have a rusty muffler from an old Honda motorcycle. I was planning on sandblasting it. Any suggestions?
I have a sandblaster. Is there a certain type of sand I should use? Or maybe some other abrasive? Or maybe there is another process to remove the rust that I don't know about? Afterwards I will be painting it with a high temp matte black paint if that makes any difference. Thanks for the advice!
As long as it's not so rusty that sand blasting will blow holes in it,you should be able to use an 80 grit media. I would use garnet because it works good, can be reused, and it's not too expensive.
As for painting it,I have sandblasted a set of headers for my Nova. They were kinda pitted, but they cleaned up OK. I sprayed 3 light coats of VHT high heat exhaust paint from the local auto parts store. VHT has ceramic in it and must be heated a few times to cure it. I used a heat gun I bought from Harbor Freight tools for $10. I heated it inside and out, letting it cool down in between heating about 3 times. That was a year ago and it has not butned off yet.
