Durability of road bike rims?
Hi,
As a mountain biker, the switch to road biking has been pretty tough. I got a new road bike from the insurance company and want to keep the 700c wheels true. They look rather fragile.
Would riding the road bike on pavements, and up and down those little slopes to get on and off of pavements cause the wheel to untrue itself? Or am I being overly protective of road rims?

alloy road rims are pretty strong. people had been riding fully rigid road bikes on dirt roads and trails for 100 years before mountain bikes were even invented, and for many years, their rims were actually made of wood!
of course you don't want to be overly abusive with your road wheels because they can be expensive to replace.
Your wheels may well come out of true after the first couple of rides, but that is just because the spokes are settling in. You may also lose some spoke tension, so after maybe 2 rides, check the wheels.
the bottom line is that road wheels are really not as dainty and fragile as they look. Cyclocross is basically MTB with modified road bikes, and people use regular road wheels for this without any problems.
