do you think any of the designer dogs will wind up as real breeds?
Do you think a designer "breed" such as the labradoodle will ever be considered by the AKC as a real breed like labs or dobermans? Just wondering. No flames please.
This is how purebred dogs are made. Human beings playing around with different dogs and coming up with new breeds.
If they are sufficiently popular and become established they may be recognized in the future by a registry. Some dog fanciers do not want the AKC to recognize their breed as they think that recognition will actually hurt their breed.
The AKC only recognizes about 150 breeds and there are some 500 (more or less) recognizable breeds in the world.

If you look at some of the origins of purebred cats, it is even more interesting as some of those are just people finding an odd looking cat one day.
