What is "Professional Calibration"? when referring to LCD / Plasmas TVs?
I keep hearing about how many LCD / Plasma tvs need "professional calibration". What does this mean? What dod they do that I could not do?
Is it necessary? Could I do it myself?
Also, I'm now reading some sets by Panasonic are advertising the are "self calibrating" and do not need professional calibration?! What's that about?
1) What can a pro do that you could not do? Typically, a pro will have A) diagnostics measurement equipment, B) access to service menu controls that are not published to the consumer (manufacturer), and C) knowledge/access to the optimum measurements/settings for your particular display
2) "Self-calibrating" displays. These models offer a certain mixture of auto settings based on ambient lighting or other user-selectable conditions. These settings are broad; meaning that can't always be all things to all rooms. They can be useful to give you a good starting point to fine-tune your TV settings to your own tastes
I never heard of a consumer level LCD or Plasma that "needs" or requires professional calibration before use. The only times I would recommend a professional calib:
A) Dedicated residential home theater rooms with large-format display
B) Commercial installations (events, technical displays, etc)
C) High-end or professional series displays
D) End-users who simply wanted to invest in fine-tuning their electronics systems
Professional, certified video calibration services are not cheap. But check out the website below for more details on what to expect and why
