Mechanical Winches

Meanwhile, capstan's power relies on the vehicle's engine still but is carried directly using a dog clutch locked in the crankshaft pulley. You must also choose the right rope with the right diameter so that the slip will be minimized and the rope won't get caught by itself for it will lead to a very dangerous consequence.

Hydraulic Drum Winch

From the name itself, this winch gets its power from a hydraulic pump with the help of the car's engine. The winch is driven using a hydro motor. Aside from its high power, the advantage of the hydraulic type includes not being affected even if it's submerged into water.

Motorized, Portable, Mechanical Drum Winch

This kind of winch is uncommon; however it has a very fascinating system to boot. Unlike the usual winch where the vehicle's engine is used, the engine powers of a chain saw are utilized supplying power to a little drum winch. However, this type can be very noisy.

Hand-operated, Mechanical Wire Rope Winch

Question on pulley system and winch of helicopter ?

(1) A helicopter winch uses a pulley system consisiting of 4 pulleys in an upper block and 3 pulleys in a lower block. teh above system results in a movement ratio of 7. If the force ratio for this system is 4 then what is the efficiency of the pulley system.

(2) A serach and rescue helicopter uses the above winch to rescue a person of mass 80kg from sea to a height of 25m so which is its safe hovering height. If the overall efficiency of the winch is 0.9% of the efficiency of the pulley system and the input power to the hauling motor is 2kw, determine how long the lifting operation will take. What should be the power of the electric motor if the desired rate of lifting 100kg of mass is 1 metre per second. the efficiency values remain unchanged for the later rate of climb.

1) you should get a force multiplication of 7, so effeciency is 4/7 or 57%

2) Lifting 80kg or 784 N a height of 25 meters is work of 784*25 = 19,600 Joules of work

you lose the 43% due to the pulleys, so you now need 34,386 joules.

you lose the 10% from the winch, so you now need 38,207 joules (19,600 / (0.57*0.9) )

Motor is 2000 watts which is 2000 J/sec

38,207 joules / 2000 J/sec = 19.1 seconds.

3) same problem, different numbers.
1 m/s is 25 sec for 25 meters.
Convert 100kg in the above numbers (which were calculated for 80kg) by multiplying the answer by 100/80 or 1.25

So you need 38200 J x 1.25 or 47800 J

47800 J for 25 seconds is 1900 J/s or 1900 watts
