Hardwood floors, which to use? Drum sander, square sander, orbital sander?
I purchased a house that has hardwood floors under the carpets. I have pulled the carpets, staples and tacks. The floors have some glue remnants, some light paint residue and some dirt. They are finished otherwise and look decent. I want to touch them up. I think a drum sander would be too heavy for the job. I have never used a square or orbital sander before. Can these be used to essentially buff the top layer of the floor? I just want to remove the top layer and dirt/glue/residue. I will put down polyurethane afterwords if needed. Any suggestion or ideas? Which would you use?
If you only need to remove the top coat, an orbital (aka pad/square) sander will work fine. However, most of the time you will find scratches after you remove the top coat. The pad sander will take you forever to remove those, if it ever does. A drum sander is intimidating to those who haven't used them, but they are the best tool for the job. Start with an 80 grit belt and keep the sander moving at all times! When you near the wall slowly begin to raise the drum (there's a lever for that on the machine). If the 80 grit is taking off too little material try a 60, 36, or even 24 grit. Sand the floor thoroughly between grits.
