how do i measure my chest at home?

i think i am ready for a padded bra, but im not sure. i measured my actual chest and got 28 inches. where am i supposed to measure to no my bra size?

Let me start off by saying that the link given to the Wiki site is incorrect. Bras are infact fitted with the "Add 4 or 5" to your underbust" rule. And for the record...if this rule were false then I should be in a size 26 bra band but I know I could never fit in that because a 30 fits me perfectly snug.

There are 2 places you need to measure. Your underbust which is directly underneath your breasts. And your full bust which will be at the fullest point of your breasts - this is usually over the nipples.

Measure your underbust first with no bra, because the band on a bra will throw the measurement off. Make sure you are standing up straight and have the tape around your ribcage snug but not so tight that it's squashing your skin around the tape. Be sure that this is even around you - it can be riding up or down your back, have someone help you or use a full length mirror to check that the tape is level. Now take a look at what you measure at. If this number is even add 4". If it is odd then add 5". This will be your band size.

For your full bust you can either wear a non-padded, non-push up bra and measure over your nipples with the tape just loose enough and level or you can lean over so your back is parallel with the floor. Measure over your nipples all the way around your back - again keep the tape level but this time do not pull it tight. Whatever number this is it will be your full bust measurement (this is the measurement used when you need to figure out what dress or shirt size you wear because it asks for your full bust measurement).

To determine the cup size you subtract the underbust measurement from the full bust measurement. Every cup size is another inch in difference larger, with an A cup starting at 1" So if your ribcage measured 28 this would be a 32 because you have to add 4". Lets say your full bust measured at 35", subtract your added band size from this and you have a C cup, you would wear a 32C. And because this is what you measured at, bras in the store that are a 32C will fit you because like I said above, bras nowadays do infact coincide with this method of measuring! And if you were to stretch a bra band as far as it could go and measure how long it is you will find out that it is actually the 32" band. When the bra is unstretched, a 32" bra band will really only measure 27-28" so they do fit you according to the measuring system. (I cannot believe for the life of me someone would print that in an article - they obviously don't know anything about simple math!)
