Lots Hardware
Lots Hardware

Apart from a PC or a MAC is there any other realistic Desktop hardware alternatives?
I'm not talking about software but the equipment which runs it. There used to be lots but now the only desktop systems appear to be PC or Mac based.
First of all, there is zero difference between "PC hardware" and "Mac hardware" other than the company that assembles it. They both use the x86 processors. There are several alternatives but none are really big in desktop systems.
POWER, the type of chip used in the old Macs is still very popular. In addition to powering many of the world's fastest supercomputer, POWER-based chips power all 3 of the current generation of video game consoles (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii) and a non-slim Playstation 3 will let you install Linux on it so it makes a really really nice computer (3.2GHz, 8 core, Nvidia GeForce 7800). It's so good that the U.S. Air Force is buying a bunch of PS3s and connecting them together instead of buying a super computer.
ARM- you might not have heard of this, but you've certainly used their chips before. This British chip designer designed the chips that power your cell phone. They've made great inroads at powerful chips lately and their latest design, used in the Apple iPad, is capable of breaking 1GHz with 2 or 4 cores. Because of it's efficient design, a 1GHz ARM chip is way better than a 1GHz Intel chip.
There are others still out there, like Intel's Itanium and Sun/Oracle's Sparc but they have no penetration at all in the consumer market.
