are butterfly knives at 4" illegal to carry in public/are they illegal to have?
i have a alittle under 4 inch butterfly knife with holes, and i was wondering what the law is against it, can i carry it in public? can i even have it? also, at how many inches is a pocket knife considered illegal. is it undr three inches? three inches and under? 4 5 5 1/2 unches?

It varies by a great deal from state to state in the USA.
Some states forbid all butterfly knives no matter the length. Others have no restrictions on them at all.

EDIT: Oh boy. MN has a notoriously vague and over-broad law regarding knives. Under Section 609.66, a "weapon" is "any device designed as a weapon and capable of producing death or great bodily harm."
The state has no laws regarding length. It comes down to intent.
State v. Moss (1978) established that in order for something to meet the criteria of being a weapon, that way it is USED is considered. For example, if you are chopping celery in a kitchen with a knife, then it is not an illegal weapon. But if you take that same knife and pull it out on the street and say "I'm gonna cut you, you ----!" then it is an illegal weapon.
The case "In re Welfare of N.W.D. (2002)" involved a boy with a 4" butterfly knife who was threatening another kid. He was found guilty of it being a dangerous weapon not because it was a butterfly knife, but because he was saying he was going to stab a person with it.
However, if you behave yourself, carry the knife discreetly, and don't threaten people or "play" with it in public, it should be fine. Just be mindful of local city laws. Because the state laws are so vague, city laws could be quite specific.
