How to handle the situation?
What if you had puppies for sale, and the sire has died from a rare baterial disease (causing the dog to bleed out through the anus in a matter of a couple of hours), and the potential owners want to see the sire? What would you do/how would you handle it?
BTW, no other dogs caught the bacteria, so it's not contagious.
Obviously you don't want to scare off a good potential owner, so how would you handle it?
Patient Paws: We obviously didn't knwo that the dog had this bacteria. It evolved in a matter of a couple of HOURS and killed him. He had also just gotten his championship. Obviously if we had known, he wouldn't have been bred, however, we only found out because of the necropsy. And I don't think it's a thumbs down fairy, it's probably other people like me, who know that you didn't pay attention too much to the question, and people who think you are wrong.
Oh lordy! That would be bad.
Assuming that I have proof of his death and diagnosis from the owner of the sire and a name for it (not just a 'bacterial infection') to show that I really know what happened and the name for it, I would simply tell the potential puppy buyers what happened. Assuming that I also have plenty of pictures of the stud dog, in the yard, on the field, in the show ring, I would offer to show them and describe as best I could per the stud dog's owners words, his temperament and qualities and size, etc.
But before all I would tell them that it is not contagious to the mother/pups, just to put their minds at ease and so that they will listen calmly instead of worrying about whether their new puppy has it or not and second guessing their choice.
edit: Patient Paws, calm down. That's like saying you should never breed a dog who got mange once or something.
edit edit: No, PP, you responded with an uneducated answer as if you didn't bother to take the time to understand the question. You made it sound as though the dog never should have been bred because of that disease, although it was clearly stated that it is not contagious and killed him in a matter of hours, which suggests that it was not genetic or anything of that nature.
