Do i need a set up to go from gauge 9 strings to gauge 10?
My guitar strings a currently gauge 9 strings, i was wondering if i needed a complete guitar set up to change to gauage 10 strings. Also, can i drop down to tunings such as drop B with gauge 10 strings, My guitar is a Kerry King V BC Rich Guitar.
Yes, and yes.
For your setup and intonation to be correct it needs to be done when you change your string gauge and/or when you change your tuning by any significant degree.
Ie, I won't bother to change the setup if I'm going between standard and drop d, but I certainly would if I'm spending any time in Drop C or something like that.... detuning changes the amount of "pull" the strings exert on the neck, so the neck will be in a different position relative to the strings after detuning... so yeah, new setup time.
In Drop B you'll be a little loose. Ideally I'd go for 11's... it can still be done, don't get me wrong, but you'll probably want to be careful how you play - don't strum too hard, don't over-bend, don't fret too hard, and check your tuning after each song until you get the hang of how stable (or not) your tuning is.... the standard stuff, really.
Honestly, I prefer a lot of tension in my strings - I use 11's, and tune to Drop D down 1/2 step (ie Drop C#), and that's about right for me. I don't like going much lower, after playing an acoustic for so many years I expect the strings to kinda push back, if that means anything.
