can HTML I-frame auto-refresh without images?

Hi, i have an HTML i frame auto refreshing window in order to update a forum's personal messaging system as it doesn't support push. is it possible to code this so that it doesn't keep re-loading the same images over and over again. This is because it often takes much longer to load images. Thank you very much!

You can change the server's cache management to allow caching of the image, but this will probably be unreliable as the browser has to follw the cache-header instructions.

The best way to do this would be to do an Ajax HTTP request so that it reloads only the content area. Probably a bit too advanced.
