Yamaha RD250 2 stroke?
Is there another way to set the timing other than with a dial indicator that screws down in the combustion chamber? The bike has been sitting for 15 years and I cleaned the carbs and put new plugs in it and it fired right up but I get it out on the highway and after i hit 7000 rpms sometimes it just takes off and burries the tach. Even pulling the spark plug wires won't kill it. Would carbon build up cause this?
Assuming you do not have static timing marks on the flywheel, another way would be to get the timing spec in degrees and use a degree wheel. Or in the absence of a dial indicator you could use a timing plug, a metal rod inscribed in one millimeter increments, held by a fitting that screws into the spark plug hole. In a pinch, I have dropped a pencil into the hole and marked its position with a knife.
You problem does not sound like timing, however. Hot carbon deposits could be igniting the mixture, as you suggest. Another explanation is hard to imagine. I have seen "dieseling" at low speeds, but never at high speeds. No matter, it is not a big deal to remove the heads and see for yourself.
