Datsun 260z? info, specs, ideas?

today i spied a datsun sitting on the side of the road. the body is in very bad condition, holes and such. the owner says it ran when he parked it some years ago. i popped the hood and found no air cleaner and a mysterious manifold sitting not doing anything. he said $500. anyone have advice?

The 260Z and the earlier 240Zs were great cars in their day. The worst thing about them is they were prone to rust but that was the worst thing about most cars back then. The 240Z was the first Japanese performance car. When pollution controls robbed some of the power Datsun increased the engine size from 2400 to 2600 CCs and the 260 Z was born. The engines had a good reputation for durability and reliability. You can buy replacement body panels but unless you are skilled with a MIG welder it's probably more of a project than you want. If I found a good 240 or 260Z I would snatch it up in a hurry but based on your description I would pass on that one. An old Datsun Z won't have the power or handling of a new sports car but it is a good looking car that people don't see every day.
