can turbo be bad for a car?
im trying to get a car but my grandma is paying for it, i found a nice one with only 50k miles and its close...its a nissan 240sx, she thinks that when a car has a turbo in it, it has a better chance of breaking or something and she said the more parts the more problems...but when a car has all the right parts for a turbo it shouldnt hurt much right?
heres alot of the stuff it has
Apexi turbo timer
650cc fuel injectors
Greddy turbo manifold
Garret GT2876R turbo charger
Apexi safc
Electronic fans
3" turbo back without cat
Manual boost controller
ACT stage 3 clutch with flywheel
New alternator and water pump
New spark plugs
18" black rims with polished lip
Boost,volt,and pyrometer gauges
Drilled and slotted performance rotors with new brakes
Nexx drifting suspension
Front camber kit
Front mount intercooler
255lph Warlboro fuel pump
car is $4500 btw
Your grandma is absolutely right.
You should never buy a car equipped with an aftermarket turbo.
First: a turbo is very hard on the engine, especially one that was not originally designed for it. Amongst other things I don't see anything to suggest it has a lowered compression ratio or stronger head studs. This alone means you should expect regular head gasket trouble.
Secondly: "drifting suspension" ?!? Dude, what does that tell you about how the previous owner drove it ?
Thirdly: Who's going to maintain it ? everytime you'll want to get something done you'll discover something else that isn't stock and you'll have to figure out what was done and where to source a replacement. And everyitme it'll be more money and more time wasted.
Buying a used turbo car is always a little riskier than a non-turbo car simply because you have no way of knowing how it was driven. Turbocharged cars require longer warm-up and cool-off periods than non-turbo. The cost of not doing this is broken turbocharger bearings. That's with a factory installation. Multiply the list of potential trouble spots with an aftermarket installation.
