Buffing/polishing a diamond?
I bought my wife a ring and the center stone is about 45pts. Whenever it get wet in jewelry cleaner or water the daimond looks great but as soon as it dries it looses its sparkle. Would I have to take it to a jeweler to polish it or can I put something to keep it looking like that?
The best way to polish something -- and you can do it at home -- is to use a Dremel tool with one of the specific buffing attachments. They have soft surfaces, but they're sturdy enough that you can press the surface hard against your gem. It *won't* hurt your gem, though you want to be careful not to flip it out of its setting.
As for adding anything to your cleaning solution, I wouldn't. There's really nothing that you could realistically add that would hurt the stone, but it could definitely tarnish the gold/silver/whateer. Jewelers will usually buff it them for you for free, even if you didn't buy the ring from that store, I guess out a sign of good faith or something (and the fact that it takes them about 15 seconds total) to make you go back to their store when you buy another piece.
I'd buy the Dremel. It's useful for hundreds of applications around the house, with probably thousands more with all of the different ways that all of the different attachments can be used. If you can, I'd shell out for the flexible tip. It's worth it -- makes everything easier, no matter what project it is that you do.
