What is the best wireless router I could buy?
I have recently had cable broadband installed.
I wish to buy a wireless router so I can connect my laptop, my desktop PC and my XBox 360 to the internet.
I already have wireless cards in both the laptop and desktop PC.
What I would like to do is the following;
Buy a network ethernet splitter so I have a wired ethernet connection from the XBox to the cable modem and a wired ethernet connection from the cable modem to the future wireless router.
Connect both my PC and laptop to the wireless router. (both are 802.11g).
My first question is whether this is feasible?
My second question is which wireless router would be the best value for money bearing in mind ease of installation. I do not want to buy a router that will take days to set up and involve dozens of calls to technical support?
Any advise would be appreciated - I am not computer illiterate but then I'm no networking wizard either!
Well, first off you will not need to split the ethernet between the modem and your wireless/X-Box. Most likely your wireless router will also have a few (most likely 4) connections for wired access that your X-Box can connect to...
The wireless will support up to 128 wireless devices so connecting your 2 computers will not be an issue.
In my opinion, LinkSys make the best home equipment. They are owned by Cisco which makes network equipment for businesses and since they bought LinkSys they have made great improvements. The documentation that they provide is easy to follow.
I would suggest that the first thing you do when you get your wireless would be to change the default password. So many people forget to do that and leave the default password which anyone can find out within minutes.
