Duramax Water Pump Replacement?
Alright, I've broken down and started saving up for the water pump and labor on it. It is leaking from the gasket around the water pump cover. It's not coming from the intake manifold gasket because there isn't any sign of leaks above the water pump. I've decided since you have to pull the water pump to replace the gasket and drain all the coolant, it's best to go ahead and buy all new coolant, pump, and gasket. Just for preventative maintenance reasons. Total for all parts is right around $200.
My question is just how difficult would it be for a DIY person to do this in the driveway? It is an 05 GMC Duramax and I'm really getting fed up with the coolant spots all over the driveway. I can do pretty basic wrenching, so what would I be looking at timewise.
Would it be best to leave it to an ASE mechanic with a fully equipped shop? About what would I be looking at turnaround time and price for that?
Any information on replacing a DURAMAX water pump would be great!
It's been a while since I've done one, but they are a bit of a bugger. GM warranty time is around 3 hours, so regular flat rate time would be 4 to 4 1/2.
If memory serves me the harmonic balancer has to come off to do this, you'll have to block the flywheel so it can't turn, as I'm guessing you aren't going to be using air tools to remove the bolts.
Also, maybe think about replacing the hoses while you are at it, especially that little short one off the pump to the engine.
