Here are just a few inspiring ideas for your old hoses:

Protect Young Trees: When supporting young trees, cut a piece of garden hose and run wire through to attach to support stakes. The hose prevents the wire from damaging your saplings.

Earwig Trap: Earwigs love to hide in small, dark places. Place 6-inch pieces of hose in your garden to attract these nasty insects. Later shake them free into a bucket of soapy water.

Garage Buffers: Especially helpful for new drivers in the household, screw lengths of hose at bumper level to corners of the garage door frame to prevent unsightly dents in the trim.

Soaker Hoses: Make your own soaker hose by crimping the open end and drilling some holes throughout the hose. Bury it just under the soil around your plants and fill with water. It will keep your plants watered for days.

Water Level: Walter Reeves, the host of TV's Garden Sense, transformed his garden hose into a giant water level in order to set an even grade for his patio. He attached 3-foot pieces of clear vinyl to each end of the hose and filled it with colored water.

Tool Hanger: Halve a 2 foot segment of hose and screw both ends to a wall. It creates a hanger that will hug the handles of your tools.

Blade Protector: Slit a length of hose and slide it over the teeth edge of your handsaw to protect the blade when not in use. This also works great with knife or ice skate blades.

Bucket Handle: Slip a piece of hose through the wire handle of a bucket or paint can to provide a better grip.

Swing Protector: Slide a length of swing-set chains through garden hose to protect little fingers when swinging.

Faucet Extension: Bury lengths of linked hose underground to relocate an outdoor spigot to a more useable location.

Snake Scare: Create a snake decoy to frighten away annoying flocks of birds. Cut a short length of hose and lay it on the grass in a snake position. It fools them everytime.

Downspout De-Clogger: Push the hose up through a clogged downspout allowing the water from the gutter to drain and carry away any trapped debris.

Play Telephone: Make an old-fashioned play telephone for the kids. Cut a length of hose and attach a funnel to each end with duct tape. Let the kids chat all they want.

Landscaping Tool: When laying out a new garden, use a length of garden hose to create the initial outline and then dig around it.

Curve Sander: Hose works great as a sanding tool for tight curves such as trim or crown molding. Take a length of hose, split it lengthwise and insert one edge of the sandpaper. Wrap it around the hose, trim to fit and insert the other end in the slit. Close the slit with some duct tape and get sanding!

What is the best way to disconnect the fitting on the end of the alumunim part of the heater hose.?

It runs up over the passenger side valve cover into the top of the block right below the throttle body, and the fitting on the end of the aluminum/steel piece of hose where it connects to that part of the block is very tight and very hard to get loose to remove it. It's on a 1987 S10 2.8L V6.
I need to get the steel pipe part out of the top of the block.

It sounds like an industrial heat-sealing machine for making blister packs. If the info you have has a model number, you might be able to contact a distributer who might be able to match it up with a manufacturer for you.

If it is a metal stamping machine, why does it have a heated platten with timers for "pre-seal, seal and cool" etc, and what would the RF generator be for but to heat plastic or similar materials. Also, it sounds like the cylinder for the platten is only 2.5" in diameter and run by compressed air; too wimpy for stamping/punching metal. The electrical requirements are only 1-phase @ 110v, a machine for stamping metal would need to be pretty powerful, probably 3-phase @ 208 or 480 vac.

Choose the Most Efficient Air Cleaner for Your Home

You can get a whole home air cleaner if you have a forced air system, meaning you have a furnace or furnace and air conditioner. Then you already have a basic mechanical filter. That’s your first, crude level of defense against air pollution.

These mechanical filters are typically made of a coarsely woven metal. They can only remove large particles of dirt and hair.  Even that capacity is greatly reduced when the filters are not replaced regularly. Worse yet, these mechanical filters can’t capture the tiny RSPs.

If you do not have a forced-air system or want to consider a portable, room-only device, here’s the basics you need to know.

Get a Portable Room-only Device or a Whole Home System?

The next step is to choose between a portable room-only cleaner and a whole home cleaner. Unfortunately, some don’t have that choice. You can’t get a whole home system if you do not have a forced-air home furnace or air conditioning system. 

In considering portable devices you have two kinds: ones with mechanical filters or ionizers.

Mechanical Filter-Based Portable Air Devices

The best kind of portable systems meet the HEPA (high efficiency particulate air filters) standard.  That means they can capture 99.97 percent of the airborne particles 0.3 microns and larger that pass through the filter. These include tobacco smoke, household dust and pollen. Mechanical filters draw air through a flat, pleated or high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) surface to trap particles.

That design means HEPA filters can be efficient in the beginning yet tend to clog easily. Clogging reduces airflow and thus their ability, over time, to remove pollutants. Filters must be changed with some frequency to maintain HEPA-level efficiency. Not all if us remain that diligent, even if we intend to be.

“Gary McEldowney, the marketing director for AllergyBuyersClub.com, said the cost of a purifier could range from $150 to $700, depending on size and features. Replacement HEPA filters cost $40 to $150.” Other models are much more expensive.

Another obvious disadvantage is that a single room cleaner can’t keep the rest of the air in your home clean.  It can’t even maintain the high HEPA standard in the room in which it is used, unless it runs continuously and the door and windows to the room are kept closed – an unlikely possibility.

This room-only approach is akin putting a bandaid on a wound.

Portable Room Ionizers

Ionizers emit a small charge to the air stream that causes particles to adhere to the filter or other surfaces by a magnetic-like attraction.  But this is not efficient as particles can become re-suspended.

Worse yet, ionizing emits ozone, a lung irritant that is also linked to other health problems. It can have damaging health effects, especially for those with asthma and other lung diseases, children and the elderly.

According to Consumer Reports and the EPA, “While some indoor air pollutant concentrations decline in the presence of ozone, other pollutants increase. In fact, upon reaction with ozone, some previously undetected, toxic chemicals emerge in indoor air, including formaldehyde and other aldehydes.” See the EPA’s article, "Ozone Generators Sold as Air Cleaners."

To add insult to injury, the units make a zapping and other noise as they emit ozone. Also it requires time-consuming cleaning and frequent filter changes to maintain even a lower level of performance.

Your best option, if you cannot get a whole home air cleaner, is to get a portable, room-only device with a mechanical, HEPA-grade filter.

If your home has a forced-air system you can get a whole home system. Now you’ll see your options. The good news is that there are clear choices. You do not have to spend a lot of time nor money to get healthy air throughout your home.

How to Choose the Most Efficient Whole Home Air Cleaner

Whole home air cleaners can be placed in the ductwork of forced-air systems heating or air-conditioning (also known as in-duct air cleaners). 

“If you are using forced air for, the best way to clean the air in your house is to add a filtration module to your system,” said Alex Wilson, president of BuildingGreen in Brattleboro, Vermont.  As you’ll read further down, however, you may not have to mess with the ducts, with a hybrid system. It can be retrofitted, that is bolted right onto your existing unit.

Here are the kinds of whole home air cleaners from which you can choose:

 Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPS)

 All electrostatic precipitators use electricity to charge particles passing through them and then attract them electrically (make them “stick”) to either plates or a filter.

 As you compare systems consider these five key factors:

1.  Performance over time: Efficiency goes down over time in some systems.

 2.  Maintenance: It is key to continuously high performance. Some systems are considerably more complex, messy and time-consuming - as are some filters. Even a diligent person can get tired of the upkeep and avoid doing it. Some systems require more frequent filter changes than others. 

3. Ease and cost of installation.

4. Sound: Some systems create noise while others are quiet.

5. Ozone emission: Some cleaners emit ozone, the pollutant in smog. Ozone can cause lung damage and other health problems. It also creates noise as it arcs, sparks and pops.

Following are the categories of air cleaner systems, described in the order of increasing levels of air cleaning performance, maintenance needs and convenience. 

1. Electrostatic Filters

This is the least expensive kind of filtering system, removing 90% of particles that are 0.3 microns or less. It requires frequent filter change and, more importantly, performance goes down over time.  One example is the Filtrete. Electrostatic units filter the air using static electricity. They have a static charge on the filter to allow airborne particles to "stick" to the filter, just like static-charged clothing sticks together.

The drawbacks to these units are that they capture fewer RSP’s and the filter needs to be replaced frequently

2. Conventional Electronic Air Cleaners

 EACs charge particles and cause them to stick to plates inside the unit or to a filter. In this way they trap and filter up to 98% of pollutants from the air passing through your heating and cooling system. This kind of air cleaner can capture microscopic impurities like dust, smoke and smog particles in addition to larger particles like mold spores and cat dander.

Collected pollutants are removed by cleaning the plates in the sink or dishwasher.  Some EAC’s use grounded filters instead of plates but these require expensive replacements.

 

3. Hybrid Electronic Air Cleaner

A hybrid electronic air cleaner eliminates the need for wires (or pins) and plates.  Instead it uses a non-metallic material to conduct the electricity and charge the RSP’s. Thus you can avoid the messy and time-consuming cleaning that comes with metal-based EAC technology. 

Then, it uses an inexpensive, recyclable but highly-efficient, loosely woven filter to capture the particles.  This loose weave enables the unit to operate with low static pressure. Filters replacements are easier than with conventional EACs.

Once to twice a year, depending on amount of air pollution filters are changed. 

As a consequence of these innovations, consumers get the upside of a conventional EAC (high efficiency) without the downsides (higher maintenance, costlier and more invasive installation, ozone emission in some, etc.).

Plus, since this hybrid operates in a way that reduces system wear and tear and is easier to maintain, the initial high-performance is continuous. It does now go down over time.

One final thought. Winter is coming. Days are getting colder and shorter. You may be spending more time inside. Consider installing an air cleaner soon. Healthier air is the priceless gift for yourself and those who share the holidays with you at home.

what is the flow of air in cu. ft from a regulator with 3500 psi inlet and 150 psi outlet.?

air is supplied from a cascade of 6 cylinders of 300 cu. ft. capacity.

Would need to know the orifice diameter that is flowing air from this 150 psi source.........and if you are asking cu ft per minute.......

The rate of flow won't change whether there was 6 or 60 cylinders, but more overall delivered cu ft when the cascade was depleted.

How Portable Air Compressors Work

There are many portable air compressors on the market today of varying sizes and power. And though they vary by size and power, they all work on just a couple of different technologies to generate air pressure.

Most air compressors work by what's called positive displacement. This is different from compressors that use rotating impellers to generate air pressure. Instead, air pressure is increased by reducing the size of the space that contains the air. Usually, this is done with a reciprocating piston.

Like a small internal combustion engine, a conventional piston compressor has a crankshaft, a connecting rod and piston, a cylinder and a valve head. The crankshaft is driven by either an electric motor or a gas engine. While there are small models that are comprised of just the pump and motor, most portable air compressors have an air tank to hold a quantity of air within a preset pressure range. The compressed air in the tank drives the air tools, and the motor turns on and off to automatically maintain pressure in the tank.

At the top of the cylinder, there is a valve head that holds the inlet and discharge valves. Both are simply thin metal flaps, one mounted underneath and one mounted on top of the valve plate. As the piston moves down, a vacuum is created above it. This allows outside air at atmospheric pressure to push open the inlet valve and fill the area above the piston. As the piston moves up, the air above it compresses, holds the inlet valve shut and pushes the discharge valve open. The air moves from the discharge port to the tank. With each stroke, more air enters the tank and the pressure rises.

Portable air compressors use a pressure switch to stop the motor when tank pressure reaches a preset limit, about 125 psi for many single-stage models. Most of the time, though, that much pressure isn't needed. Therefore, the air line will include a regulator that is set to match the pressure requirements of the tool being used. A gauge before the regulator monitors tank pressure and a gauge after the regulator monitors air-line pressure. In addition, the tank has a safety valve that opens if the pressure switch malfunctions. The pressure switch may also incorporate an unloader valve that reduces tank pressure when the compressor is turned off.

Many articulated-piston compressors are oil lubricated. The pistons have rings that help keep the compressed air on top of the piston and keep the lubricating oil away from the air. Rings, though, are not completely effective, so some oil will enter the compressed air in aerosol form. Having oil in the air isn't necessarily a problem. Many air tools require oiling, and inline oilers are often added to increase a uniform supply to the tool.

On the negative side, these models require regular oil checks, periodic oil changes and they must be operated on a level surface. While solutions to the airborne oil problem include using an oil separator or filter in the air line, a better idea is to use an oil free portable air compressor that uses permanently lubricated bearings in place of the oil bath.

Though many portable air compressors are similar, this should help you to understand some of the mechanical differences of the various types available.

I have a question concerning Elijah McCoy's invention the lubricator for the trains?

ok I need to know if the way his invention the (lubricator) works has anything to do with chemistry? its works like this: With steam from the boiler cut off by the intake valve, the McCoy lubricator is filled to the top with oil.The oil and air inside the lubricator is at atmospheric pressure.
