I am having a bit of a problem, i understand 00-FF type of editing for hex. i dont however understand something like 0x54f8, could someone tell me what this means please, i am dumb founded
0x is used to signify that the value is hexidecimal rather than decimal. 0x54F8 is just hex still. This time, instead of the int8s you're familiar with, it's an int16 (16 bit value). The concept here is, the least significant byte is how you already recognise it, (F8 = 248), and the most significant byte is 0x54 = 84. You count these bytes in base 256, similar to any other counting system, the more significant byte is raised to the power of the base. In this case, the actual decimal value of 0x54F8 can be calculated as ((256^1 * 84) + (256^0 * 254)). The maxmum value that can be held in an int16 is 0xFFFF, which is decimal 65535.
The concept can be extended to int32 and int64 values, giving values like 0xFFFFFFFF (4294967295) etc.
A big thing to look out for when you understood the above though, is that the notation of attaching 0x to the value is used with Big-endian values. (The most significant value comes first). Savvy energy managers have discovered - sometimes the hard way - the importance of selecting the appropriate software package to meet their needs. Before reviewing software packages, it is best to understand the needs of your organization and the resources available. Then you can compare each program's capabilities (such as budgeting and forecasting, temperature correction, rate analysis, report generation, etc.) against your needs.
Making the wrong choice can result in wasted time and hours of frustration, or worse - dissatisfied clients or management.
This paper will help you to identify what tasks you want to accomplish with your utility bill tracking software.
WHY NOT JUST USE SPREADSHEETS?
If you are tracking energy usage and costs for a handful of meters, a spreadsheet may be adequate; however, if you are tracking for a large organization with many facilities, or tracking savings from energy efficiency measures, then commercial energy accounting software may be the best and easiest way to track your utilities.
INTRODUCTION TO UTILITY BILL TRACKING SOFTWARE
All the major utility bill tracking software packages are good at what they do. However, they are all different and have different capabilities. Although you can track your utility bills effectively in any of the software packages, depending upon what your specific needs are, there is likely a program that is more suited to your needs than the others. Choosing the correct software package the first time can save you hours of work, and help you avoid the frustration of discovering too late that it does not produce what you wanted.
NARROWING DOWN THE SCOPE OF OUR ANALYSIS
In order to narrow down the scope of this presentation, we have made two rough classifications, which are detailed below. This paper covers desktop (not web-based) utility bill (not interval data) software programs.
Web vs. Desktop Applications
Using the web to track your energy usage is useful for large organizations. Large companies dispersed around the globe can enter their utility usage, and see reports comparing the usage in Lubbock to the usage in London. Central energy managers can then easily allocate energy costs across the enterprise and locate high usage facilities and concentrate efforts there. However, enterprise web applications are usually relatively expensive and often offer only basic analysis functionality. There are a great number of web applications available, most of which focus on interval (e.g. 15-minute) data.
There are also some internet bill tracking services that are relatively inexpensive. These applications will present your data to you on the web in a number of ways, but at present appear to be limited in analytical capacity and functionality. For example, these web services typically will not weather normalize utility data, which results in faulty year over year comparisons of utility bills. These web services are not addressed in this paper.
There are only a handful of utility bill software programs in the desktop market. Desktop applications usually offer more sophisticated analysis than their web brethren, and usually at a much-reduced price compared to web software. Many desktop packages offer some interface to the internet, such as downloading bill, interval or weather data, and creating html reports.
Interval Data vs. Utility Bills
Although there is considerable value to be found in analysis of interval data, there do not appear to be enough interval data experts to go around. Some organizations have paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for interval data enterprise software, only to have it go unused, often due to lack of trained and available staff that can gain meaningful information from it.
Interval data can be used for several purposes, some of which are listed below:
- Determining when equipment is turned on and off
- Discovering and diagnosing equipment and controls problems,
- Load shedding,
- Aggregating energy usage across an enterprise into load profiles which can be used when procuring energy supply contracts,
- Applying rates to the interval data to get a better understanding of the hourly cost of running the facility.
Viewing utility bills in monthly (or billing) increments is a simpler discipline which is more comprehensible to management, more familiar to energy professionals, and more commonly practiced. Plenty of useful information about a facility can be gleaned from utility bills, some of which are listed below:
- Determining whether the facility is saving energy and utility costs
- Identifying the most wasteful facilities
- Identifying controls and equipment problems
- Budgeting and Forecasting
- Understanding where utility costs are going
- Performing rate analysis
- Verifying that the utilities are billing correctly
- Identifying changes in facility usage patterns
As the topic of this paper is Utility Bill Tracking, we will not cover interval data analysis here, however it is important to note that some desktop packages can handle both your utility bill and interval data, and can reconcile your utility bills with interval data.
SOFTWARE SELECTION CRITERIA
Perhaps the best method of determining the software program for your specific needs and budget is to clarify what you would want to use the software to accomplish. Below we have listed some of the tasks that utility bill tracking software can help you perform.

- Are you more interested in utility accounting or energy analysis and saving energy?
- Do you need to identify the most inefficient facilities?
- Do you need to measure energy savings from your energy conservation projects or from performance contracts?
- Do you need to streamline your utility bill payment system?
- Do you need to create an incentive system to encourage employees to save energy?
- Do you need to verify that your utility bills are correct?
- Do you need to allocate costs from master meters to submeters and subsidiary accounts?
- Do you need to identify anomalous changes in utility usage?
- Do you need to understand the relationship between production at your factory (or occupancy at your hotel, etc.) and utility usage?
- Do you need to create budgets and track your utility costs against the budgeted costs?
- Do you need to evaluate different rate structures on your utility data to find the best rate?
Once you have determined your specific needs and budget, you can identify which software features are necessary accomplish these tasks. This section lists features and selection criteria with which you can sift through the software programs to find the one best suited to your needs.
Capacity: How Large A Project Will You Be Working With?
The software packages currently available represent a wide range of capacity - from a low end of several hundred meters to a high end of nearly unlimited accounts. If you are putting together a utility bill tracking project with thousands of meters, then the smaller software packages may not be applicable. Some of the desktop packages have SQL databases that can handle virtually an unlimited number of accounts. Some energy managers get around the database size limitations of the smaller desktop packages by keeping several databases, each corresponding to a different section of the organization. If you are responsible for hundreds or thousands of meters, you might find that it is not necessary to track all of your meters. Tracking fire protection and street lighting meters may not result in any analytic value at all.
Energy Accounting Method: Year to Year Comparison vs. Temperature Correction
There are different ways to view your utility data. You can compare your usage from year to year to see if you are using more or less energy, or you can correct your energy usage for weather data, or other factors, such as occupancy or production.
If you compare utility usage from year to year, you can quantify the change in usage and costs. However, you cannot tell if the change is due to fluctuations in weather, changes in rate, changes to the facility itself (such as new additions, new equipment, or extra shifts), or due to reduction or increase in energy usage (which is what you are trying to determine). Energy analysts often prefer to normalize their data to weather, so that they remove these factors, and get a truer picture as to whether the facility is using more or less energy than it used to. Without weather normalization, they may not be able to tell if their project is truly saving energy, or instead, if the change in weather from year to year is responsible for changes in utility usage. This same type of normalization can be done with other factors as well, such as production, occupancy or calendar.
Be aware as well, not all weather normalization is the same. Some software packages will have extensive normalization capacity, which allows energy analysts to extract the maximum from their utility bills, whereas other programs offer very little in reporting or analysis along this line, treating normalization as an afterthought.
Ease of Use
Most of the programs are relatively simple for such tasks as data entry and report generation. These simple tasks can usually be performed by clerical workers. However, the more complex tasks are best executed by energy professionals. These more complex tasks (such as weather correction, budgeting and forecasting, creating custom reports, modeling rates, etc.) are associated with concepts (such as demand, ratchets, weather regression, and prorating) that may require some technical knowledge and analytical skills. Untrained staff may be able to run the more complex software routines but may be unable to assess the reasonableness of the approach or results.
Knowing that the more complex tasks may be more difficult to learn, it is probably best to judge general ease of use on the simple tasks, such as laying out your site and account information, entering bill data, and producing reports. The more complex functions, such as modeling rates, weather normalization, or budgeting and forecasting, by their very nature, will be more difficult in all programs. Some people are intimidated by these features in the more sophisticated programs thinking that they are just too difficult. Remember, you can grow into these advanced features in time, just as most of us did with MS Excel. In fact, it is probably a wise long-term decision to purchase software that has some features you don't yet understand, as then you have reason and tools with which to grow, and increase your skills.
Before buying the software, it would be best to take a "test drive" and see how intuitive the user interface is.
General Orientation: Energy vs. Accounting
Some software packages are more oriented towards accounting than analysis. Accounting programs will stress things such as entering all charges in the bill (which sometimes can be more than 6 different line items per bill), interfacing with accounting systems, aggregating data for payment, and creating bills for your tenants. Analysis programs will stress weather normalization, allow you to identify and cast out anomalous bills from your analysis, provide graphs displaying the relationship between weather (or production, etc.) and usage, and generally are mostly concerned only with usage, demand and total cost, but not all the little charges on the utility bill that make up the total cost. If your background is accounting, and not energy, then you will likely be more comfortable with an accounting-oriented program, rather than an analysis oriented program. If your background is energy, you will likely be more comfortable with an energy analysis-oriented program.
Interfacing With Your Accounting System
Some software packages can interface with Accounts Payable for bill payment. Typically utility bills for a utility vender are aggregated and then can be exported for Accounts Payable. Some packages will create an export in any format you choose to accommodate existing accounting procedures.
Importing and Exporting Data
All software packages offer import and export of data. Usually you will have to properly format your data before importing it. Some packages will allow you to import data from the text format in which you receive it from the utility. This custom import format is usually created by the software provider or a consultant.
Baseline Modifications
Buildings occasionally change their usage patterns. These changes can lessen the usefulness of annual comparisons of usage and costs. For example, if you were trying to track savings on a building for which you had installed energy efficient lighting, and if the building subsequently adds a new computer lab (or a new addition, or a third shift) your building usage may increase. If you were trying to determine whether the building was saving energy from your lighting retrofit, you would no longer be able to separate out the reduction in usage from the lighting from the increase in usage from the new computer lab. Some software packages will allow you to make "modifications" to the baseline to account for the new computer lab (or new addition, third shift, etc.), which then allows you to determine what savings, if any, are attributable to the lighting retrofit.
Rate Analysis
There are four main reasons analysts may want to include rate analysis in their utility bill tracking project:
- To assure that costs are correctly applied to changes in usage and demand. Since using blended rates can introduce large errors, modeling rates is the most accurate method of assigning costs to usage and demand.
- To verify that the utility is costing bills correctly.
- To assign some agreed upon cost to utility usage and demand, such as is sometimes done in performance contracting, or
- To determine which rates are best suited for your accounts.
To analyze rates, the utility rate must be entered into the program. This can be done by the analyst himself, a consultant, or oftentimes by the software provider. Many utility rates have become very difficult even for energy professionals to decipher. If you are planning on performing rate analysis in your organization, you might want to have a plan for who is going to enter the rate into your software, as this sometimes can become time consuming.
Not all desktop software packages can model utility rates, and of those that can, some may be limited in how detailed a rate can be modeled. If you want to investigate rate issues, then determine if your own rate schedules involve provisions such as demand ratchets, fuel surcharges, time of use periods, load factor tiers, etc. and then see if the softwares you are looking at can handle these provisions.
Allocating Costs to Submeters
Some analysts use their utility bill accounting software to allocate costs from master meters to submeters or subsidiary accounts. For example, a mall that charges each different tenant for their energy usage could use the software to allocate costs and usages based upon submeter readings (or other criteria such as square feet), and then create bills for the different departments.
Reporting
Once you know what tasks you intend to accomplish with your utility bill tracking system, you should have a fairly clear idea of the type of reports that will be required to fulfill these tasks. However, the quality of reports, and the ease of creating reports varies from program to program. In addition, in most programs the reports are in crystal reports, or some other canned format in which the data and the reports are not easy to modify. Countless users of one package used to create reports, then export them to Excel, then manipulate the reports to get them just so.
Emissions
Reporting on emissions (CO2, CO, NOx, etc.) being released into the atmosphere is becoming more popular. While most energy managers think it terms of usage and dollars, management may be also interested in reporting CO2 reductions to shareholders or the media.
Software Cost
The utility bill tracking programs currently available are priced from about $8,000 to about $90,000.
In addition, you might want to consider the cost to set up your database, which is usually extra. If you are busy, then the easiest and perhaps best method of starting your utility tracking database is to have an expert set it up for you. That way you can learn the program little by little as you enter data and make reports, while still having time to do the rest of your job.
Services
Consider your vendor as well. There are different types of vendors. What is their overall orientation? Is your vendor grounded in energy efficiency or energy accounting, or is your vendor primarily involved in just selling software? The vendors associated with energy efficiency are the ones who will stress analyzing your bills, finding problems, and saving energy. Some of these vendors will teach you how to analyze your usage, how to spot problems, and what actions to take to correct them. Those vendors grounded in accounting will focus on integrating with accounting systems, and will have little help or advice when it comes to energy management decisions.
Some software vendors will sell you software, perhaps bundled with some services, and you will never hear from them again. Some vendors on the other hand will go the extra step to make sure that your utility bill tracking project is a success.
OTHER FACTORS TO CONSIDER
Some factors to take into account when selecting a utility bill tracking package have nothing to do with the software itself, but rather with your own organization or the software provider.
Staff Capability and Availability
How sophisticated is your staff? How much time can they devote to utility bill tracking? Having the best utility bill accounting tool in the world is not helpful if your staff does not have the knowledge or time to get the most out of it. Be realistic about your staff and who will actually be using the software. Software training by itself may not be enough. Understanding how to run the software, but not having a good grounding in energy could lead to underutilization of the package.
In addition, it is very important to consider beforehand who will be doing what functions with the software. For example, clerical workers could input data and produce reports. Analysis and other heavy lifting might best be done by energy professionals. Do not expect your clerical staff to do more than they are capable of, or your bill tracking experience could end in failure.
Support and Ongoing Costs
Be sure to consider the availability and quality of technical support, and the associated costs. You might want to contact technical support with questions before purchasing the software, so as to get an idea of the quality of the support you will be getting. Most of the software packages come with the first year of support for free, and an additional annual fee thereafter.

returning oxygen sensor socket wrench at autozone?
I went to autozone and asked the guy for an O2 socket wrench and he sold me a regular socket wrench that wasn't compatible with my o2 sensor which I didn't realize until I got home. I already took the tags off the socket and the ratchet and tried using it once. I may have gotten a scratch on it in the process. My question is could I return the part anyway? I still have the receipt and the tags for the tools. On the back of the receipt it gives me the whole "if product has been used or opened" talk but is that really enforced? I hate that I had to spend 20 bucks on this and it wasn't the right one. If they say no could I try returning it to a different autozone? Has anyone returned an item after using it at autozone?

How To Install A Hot Water Tank
Use these instructions to install a system under the sink that provides hot water without the wait. Some high-end models even come with a water filter system and cold water dispenser.
Step 1: Shut Off the Water and Power
Clean out the area under the sink to make room for the tank.
Next, shut off the water at the water heater.
Turn off the power at the breaker. If your water heater is gas, turn the control to the 'Pilot' setting.
Step 2: Drain the Lines
Drain the water lines. Turn on the faucet at the sink where you are working, as well as an outside faucet.
Step 3: Mark the Sink
Make a dimple into the sink where the dispenser will be placed, using a drill set and hammer.
Step 4: Drill a Hole, and Smooth the Edges
Using a cordless drill and a stainless steel bit, drill a 3/4" hole into the sink.
A slug buster can also be used to cut the hole. To do so, take the cutting wheal off the slug buster. Place the slug buster into the hole and then reattach the cutting wheel underneath. Hand tighten the nut on the top side of the slug buster, then use a wrench to continue tightening until you hear a 'pop'. Remove the slug buster.
Use an emery cloth to smooth the edges.
Safety Note: Always wear safety glasses when cutting metal.
Step 5: Place the Dispenser In to the Sink
Place the seal ring to the underside of the dispenser.
Place the dispenser into the sink.
Attach the mounting ring from the underside of the dispenser over the threaded rod.
Add the hex nut, then tighten to secure.
Step 6: Connect the Water lines
Loosen the compression nut at the cold water stop under the sink and then remove the line.
Install a double compression stop to the water line and then reattach the lines to the sink.
Step 7: Mark a Spot for the Tank
Position the tank close to the plumbing and the electrical outlet. While holding the tank in place, draw a line on the wall to mark the top of the tank.
Step 8: Hang the Tank, and Connect the System
Attach the mounting bracket 1" from the line using a drill bit and 1" wood screws. Hang the tank on the bracket.
Push the blue tubing into the quick-connect fitting on the tank. Slip the clear vinyl tube over the fitting in the middle. Connect the larger tube over the last barbed fitting.
Step 9: Mount the Filter, and Add Lines
Attach the mounting bracket near the tank and then attach the filter.
Connect the 3/8" tubing from the outlet side of the filter to the 3/8" Y fitting.
Add the clear vent line to the filter
Step 10: Attach the Double Compression Stop
Attach a compression nut over the 3/8" tubing. Then, attach to the double compression stop installed at the existing water line and tighten.
Step 11: Turn on the Water and Finish Installation
Turn the water back on at the water heater.
Open the water stops under the sink, then check for leaks.
Open the cold water faucet at the new dispenser to wash out the filter. Turn off the cold water faucet and then open the hot water faucet until water begins to flow.
Plug in the tank.

I need a face plate for my lathe.?
I have a old lathe that I want to make bowls and plates with. My questions is how do I attach the wood to the lathe. It came with this knob looking thing that digs into the wood and the other end holds it in place. To turn bowls I need an open face on the turning side the knob comes off when you remove a hex nut that holds it tight, there are no threads on the spindle and it is a 1/2 inch. What do I need to get and where can I get it .

An "old" lathe is a relative term. Like it could be 20 to 80 years old? Anyway, I would do a google search to see if the manufacturer is still around and if they are, email them with your model number. Ask if they have a faceplate that will interchange with your machine. If they don't, try ebay or even a machine shop to have one built for your lathe. The good thing about having one built, is you can set your own specifications and have exactly what you want!

Metallurgy, I want to soften an 8mm allen key so I can machine it , I have a Elec muffle , ideas?
You don't need to soften it if you have tungsten carbide cutting tools, burrs, drills, etc., you do need to slow down the cutting speed somewhat. Grinding with aluminum oxide grinding wheels also works. A Dremel hand-held grinder would work, or a bench grinder.
Typically the core of the allen wrench key is softer to provide toughness (the key will bend before it breaks, warning the user, rather than just snapping off in a brittle manner).
A question: a completely softened key will not serve as a wrench key anymore, because it will bend and the hex shape will be distorted beyond use. Is it true you don't want to use it as a wrench anymore?
An electric muffle will completely soften the entire key - alternatively you can use a acetylene torch to heat up only one section (use a 'reducing' flame) to RED hot (ORANGE hot is too high and not necessary for annealing purposes).
The typical alloy additions of chrome and moly are to control the depth of hardening during the initial heat treatment. The alloy content (and the quality of the key) would determine the exact hardening treatment that would give you the optimum hardness and strength properties, but you most likely don't know the alloy content (or carbon content), so re-hardening after machining is problematic.
Suggestion: use carbide tools to machine the key (this probably would work fine) and don't soften the key, or, use a acetylene torch to soften just a local zone of the key and machine only inside this zone. Heating a narrow zone to nice RED hot (900-1100°F) will soften the key without risk of hardening (you may quench from this low temperature). The chrome/moly alloys will resist this tempering, so you may need to experiment for how long you'll need to keep RED hot to get the desired degree of softening (allen keys are inexpensive).
If you heat to to a nice ORANGE hot (1600°F+), you're getting to the hardening temperature range, from which a quench WILL harden the tool. However, without a protective atmosphere or heating with a 'salt pot' (the commerical method of heating), a lot of oxide scale will form and the surface will look kinda ugly (which is why to avoid hardening if possible and just machine directly or temper locally).

How to manually adjust automatic slack adjusters?
I want to adjust my auto slacks on my 06 Pete to make my brakes engage a bit sooner. I have tried releasing the brakes and putting a 7/16ths wrench on the adjusing screw and tighted them tight and backed off about a half a turn, while it made that ratcheting sound, or stripping sound. I'm not sure if that is the correct way to do it. I'm used to manual slacks, so I'm not sure if I'm doing it right or not. Please help.
Hmm... The auto slacks should be keeping the adjustment correctly, your truck is too new to be worrying about that issue. So, here is what I have done. First, drop the trailer, do this while bobtail.
How is your trick driving? 
Find a long driveway, get your truck in reverse and start backing up as fast as you can (in low range!) and jam the brakes hard. Do this a couple of times. You might get a click or two more out of them this way.
If you ever tried to back up your rig in high range, and got it to actually move well, you will know that at idle, in high range, you are moving at almost 20 mph. Be careful with that.
Other than that, I know what you are dealing with, it seems that the trailer is doing all the work. I don't know why some trucks feel this way and some don't. But I would trust the auto slacks to be doing their job right.
The hard and loud ratcheting sound when adjusting these kinds of slacks is normal. Some slacks have a "paw" you can pull out to relieve this, but I think those have pretty much been done away with.

The year 2009 has been a great year for new video games. There has been ample selection for gamers to choose from and many of them have been much anticipated releases. There are several titles that make the most popular selling list of 2009, for all three systems; Nintendo Wii, PSP and Xbox360. Each system offers consumers something different when enjoying some of their most favorite games.
Nintendo Wii has released a whole slew of games this year, aimed at kids and adults alike. The Wii Sports Resorts is a game that was well waited for and introduced a new Wii accessory called the Motion Plus. This little gadget allows players to get full motion access to the resort games of choice. The games in this game are fun to play and really make you feel like you are at a resort. Rabbids Go Home, was another popular game, it is one of a series that keeps getting better. People seem to like moving the rabbids around and participating in many action filled games.
The New Supermario Bros, was a very highly anticipated game. Many users young and old were lining up to get first copies. This game features the super Mario crew that we love and all of what we would expect in a Mario game. The game's graphics and unique worlds have us only guessing as to what is coming next. Nintendo Wii also released a mature game called Madworld that was quite popular. This game is for mature gamers who find different ways of killing characters to be entertaining. This game has provided lots of shock value for Nintendo Wii users.
Xbox360 has also released some excellent games. Batman Vs Arkham Asylum is a game that exhumes another chapter in the batman saga. In this game, Batman is lured to the asylum and trapped by the Joker. Batman must return the asylum back to normal while defeating the Joker and his new cast of crazy helpers. The Beatles Rock band is an assortment of video game, microphone, drum set and guitar. The game is well loved because it features all of the Beatles music that fans love and it puts the player in the perspective of the Beatles characters.
DJ Hero is another game that has been very successful in 2009. This game brought hip hop music to the gaming world and provides 93 original mixes for gamers to listen to. This includes a game, a turntable and a two-pack of CDs featuring Jay-Z and Eminem. In this game players can scratch, and mix music, move a record back and forth and rewind and replay songs.
PSP had a successful 2009 with lots of new releases and great games for all ages. DJ Hero was one of the top selling games for PSP users. Street fighter IV was also a popular game for fans. This game provided gamers with all of the fighting they have come to love, with well liked characters and beloved combat moves. This game allows for better graphics, new characters and some new fighting moves that have made this game a hit.
Rachet and Clank Future: A crack in time has been a well loved game in 2009. It features two well loved creatures of Sony and provides them with an excellent journey. Ratchet must save his robot friend and while doing so must solve lots of puzzles. This character can run and jump through-out the game while shooting his enemies.

PSP update help?
Whenever i connect my psp to my MAC OS X i make a folder and call it UPDATE. i put that into the GAME folder. the GAME folder is in the PSP folder. In the UPDATE folder i put the file i downloaded off the psp website. it is called EBOOT.PBP. then i disconnect my psp go to the memery stick icon under the game one it just says after the screen goes black, something like could not updat ... (DADADADA).Is Sony laughing at me. I am trying to do this beacause one day it said that i couldnt play Rachet and Clank Sizes Matters. It said something about like need to update to version 2.82. When i check to see wht version i have under settings/system setting/system information it says i havesystem software 3.03 OE-C or DO-C ( i can tell the difference). PLEASE HElP.

you get that error because you are on an custom firmware and yorue trying to update to an official firmware.

What You Need to Know About Changing Your Oil, That Your Car Manufacturer Will Never Tell You!
An oil change is an oil change right? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Don't get another Oil change until you read this report.
Q: Do I really need to change my oil every 3,000 to 3,500 miles? My owner's manual says I can go 5,000, 7,000 or even 10,000 miles doesn't it?
A: Technically yes it does say that, but read the not so fine print. You can only do that if you drive under light service. Guess what, 95% or more of us drive under the 'Severe' or 'Extreme' conditions as described in most owners manuals. Yep, that's everyday stop and go driving, commuting, quick trips to the store, etc.
If you drive like that, as 95% of us do, you need to change your oil every 3,000 to 3,500 miles OR every 3 months.
Q: If I only drive a few hundred miles a month can I stick to the 3,000 or 3,500 mile guideline?
A: No! You need to change your oil at least every 3 months. Remember oil isn't just for lubricating it's also for cleaning and has what are called, 'detergents' and 'additives' in the oil that suspend all the bad crud, dirt, sludge, etc. in the oil so it doesn't stick inside your engine and gum up the works, so to speak.
If oil is left in the engine to long the 'detergents' and 'additive' break down then the dirt and sludge will stick to the metal and clog the tiny oil lubricating passages in your engine.
It's just like how cholesterol in your body clogs up your veins then you don't get enough blood where you need it. When the oil passages clog in your engine the oil doesn't get where it needs to be. It can cause thousands of dollars in engine repairs. You gotta get that crud out of there to make your engine run right and last longer.
Q: What are some of the problems you have seen from people not changing oil often enough?
A: BMW, says change your oil with synthetic every 10,000 miles. But I've found when you do this the normal moisture from the engine running does not get out of the engines oil.
In winter that moisture can freeze the passage closed that vents excess pressure out of the engine. When the pressure builds up too high it has to escape somewhere. I've seen it make engine seals leak or even pop out completely loosing almost all the engines oil, valve covers warp the oil can get in the catalytic converter destroying it causing thousands of dollars worth of damage.
Toyota has had major problems with oil gelling in oil pans (just like Jell-O). When that happens, it starves the engine for oil. VW, Audi & Saab have major problems with the tube that sucks the oil from the oil pan into the oil pump clogging. Once clogged it also starves the engine of oil. Volvo piston rings get stuck scraping cylinder walls and seizing the engine solid, and on and on. They don't tell you about these problems because they want to sell more cars!
Q: Is there a difference in types of oil and brands?
A: Yes, to some degree. But a lot of it is just 'marketing hype'. Each manufacturer has their own blend of additive packages and detergents that they add, but today most cars use a blended oil with a weight of 5-30 for cold weather driving, and 10-30 for warm weather driving. The 5-30 lets the oil get thinner and flow at colder temperatures than the 10-30. No matter what type of oil you use the most important thing to do is change it often.
Q: What about 'Synthetic Oil', is it worth the extra cost?
A: Yes if you drive a high performance import car or drive a race car, but even then you'd change the oil after each race. Generally the answer's No, you pay more but as I said the 2nd role of oil is to clean your engine and trap or suspend the dirt and crud. That means you still must clean out the oil regularly even synthetic oil.
Synthetic oil does flow better in extreme cold. But, is it worth the extra cost when most manufacturers and mechanics still suggest you change synthetic oil every 5,000 miles at the most? Let me put it this way, if you bought expensive toothpaste would you brush your teeth less often?
Q: What problems do you see and hear about most often with the Fast or Quick Oil Change places?
A: I'll just list a few, there are the obvious horror stories of wrong filters put on, loose leaking or stripped drain plugs, putting too much or not enough oil in or adding the wrong fluids.
1. Take a look at who's doing the work. How much experience do think they have working on cars.
2. Take a look at their tools, are they SAE? Metric? Or more likely just a vise grip, screwdriver, and an oil filter wrench?
3. These places almost NEVER replace the oil drain plug gasket. This can cause leaks of oil onto your garage floor or even worse you could loose all your oil. Yes this really does happen!
4. Since they're not technicians how much of a total vehicle inspection can they really do? Sure they can check the fluid levels and tire pressures. Let's face it, typically it takes about 30-45 minutes to properly inspect your car and perform an Oil Change with all the right parts, tools, gaskets, filters, etc.
They have to do it in under 10 minutes to make money, how much time can they take with your car? Sure they'll do it fast but is that what you really want? If you got a checkup from a doctor would you want the fastest one or the most thorough, even if it took a little longer?
5. Don't fall for all those extra things they often try to sell you. I'm talking about - higher quality oil, synthetic oil, additives, wiper blades, PCV valves, air filters. And additional charges for import car filters and oil if you need over 4 or 5 quarts.

Should I buy Metric or SAE?
I want to buy my husband a set of wrenches but I'm not sure whether I should get metric or SAE...he does a lot of work on our cars. I'm sure he'd eventually want both sets but which is better to start with?
We have a Ford focul, Mazda tribute, a Chevy Nova and a sea-doo.
...But if I wanted to buy one to start with...is it a toss up?
If he's doing lots of work on vehicles, he will eventually need both. But it's a good idea to start with Metric. Even domestic cars are mostly metric fasteners these days.
And here's a bit of unsolicited advice. If you're going to buy tools, buy quality tools! To quote my father regarding tools. "If you buy the best, you only have to cry once."

How can i open my xbox without a torx 10 screw driver or alan wrench?
When I opened my xbox I used a screwdriver. It is tricky and you need a certain size for it to work. Also you may be able to use a pair of scissors or a knife if they are the right size.
