Do you know how used restaurant oil is disposed of?
I know that there are companies that are paid to pick up the used oil. What I want to know is where that oil goes once it is picked up. I'm guessing that they don't landfill it.
There's definitely a specific place for it, though I don't know what that is.
But owners of bio-diesel cars can use some of the used oil as fuel, as long as it wasn't used to cook meat. It burns clean, too.

Can I uses a steel hose splicer in an automotive air conditioner system?
I have a '99 Chevy Astro Van AWD /w rear A/C. The low pressure line (hose) returning from from the evaporator in the back has a cut in it. Replacing the whole thing is insanely expensive and probably involves pulling the engine! Anyhow I am going to try to splice the line. Can I use a steel hose splicer, or is there a problem with using steel parts, will it corrode or something?
I see no reason why you can't repair this line by installing a flare type brass coupling - a compression fitting isn't recommended on a steel line.
The maximum pressure on this low side line will rarely exceed 100 psi.

what does qui pro domina justitia sequitur mean from the DOJ seal?
there doesn't seem to be any direct translation from latin to english
In a revised letter, dated February 14, 1992, from the U.S. Department of Justice in reply to a request for an English rendering of the Latin motto appearing on the seal of the Department of Justice: "Qui Pro Domina Justitia Sequitur," as well as an explanation of how the Department came to adopt the motto, the Department responded that there has not been an "entirely successful" effort "to arrive at definitive answers."
In that letter, the following effort to explain the motto appears to be the most direct and well-documented:
"...The curious obscurity surrounding the origins of the Department's seal makes it difficult definitively to interpret the motto appearing on it. As I suggested above, no evidence has been unearthed that indicates unambiguously how, why, or when, the Department's motto was chosen and placed on the seal, or what its exact meaning may be.
According to a longstanding (and officially-sanctioned) Department tradition, however, the motto was suggested to Attorney-General Black by a passage in Lord Coke's 'Institutes,' Part 3, folio 79, which reads thus:
'And I well remember, when the Lord Treasurer Burleigh told Queen Elizabeth, Madam, here is your Attorney-General (I being sent for) qui pro domina regina sequitur, she said she would have the records altered; for it should be attornatus generalis (i.e., "(your) attorney general";) qui pro dominal veritate sequitur.'
The first of these phrases is believed to have been quoted by Burleigh from a Latin form then in use (all judicial proceedings were at that time required to be recorded in Latin) in making up the record of actions brought by the Attorney-General on behalf of the Crown. It is translated, 'who (the Attorney-General) sues for (or on behalf of) our lady the Queen.' "Sequor" is employed in the same sense (i.e., to sue or bring suit) in the 'Statute of Westminster' 2, Chap. 18, as follows: "in elections illius qui sequitur pro hujusmodi debito" (see 'Coke's Institutes,' Part 2, folio 394). In fact our word "sue" comes from "sequor" (See 'Century Dictionary').
Dean Pound [Letter dated October 2, 1933, from Roscoe Pound, Dean Harvard Law School, to Albert Levitt, Special Assistant to the Attorney General] elaborated upon this story and offered his explanation of the motto thus:
'The matter is very simple indeed. The "pro" goes with the noun and the verb. The motto is taken from the commencement of a pleading in a proceeding by the Attorney-General at common law. ...[U]ntil the reign of George the Second, all pleadings were in Latin. The Attorney-General began, 'Now comes so and so, Attorney-General, who prosecutes on behalf of our Lord, the King.'
In the reign of Elizabeth, of course, this would have been 'who prosecutes on behalf of our Lady, the Queen.' Domina Justitia - our Lady Justice - was substituted for our Lady the Queen, or our Lord the King. In other words, the seal asserts that the Attorney-General prosecutes on behalf of justice. This would seem a very appropriate motto for the Federal Department of Justice.
I remember reading Mr. Easby-Smith's [James S. Easby-Smith, "The Department of Justice: Its History and Functions." 1904] account of this and it seemed to me very baffling on this point. The passage in Coke's 'Third Institute' [sic] means that when the Lord Treasurer introduced Coke as Attorney-General to Queen Elizabeth he said in Latin, 'Here is your Attorney-General qui pro domina regina sequitur', [sic] that is, who prosecutes for our Lady the Queen[.] Elizabeth, who was an excellent scholar, answered, "It should be, Attorney-General who prosecutes for our Lady the Truth."
Other, basically similar, interpretations of the motto - some grammatically suspect, others more or less literal than the foregoing, but none inappropriate to the Department's mission - have been advanced. Notwithstanding such alternative translations, however, following Dean Pound and the Department's immemorial tradition, the most authoritative Department opinion suggests that the motto refers to the Attorney General (and thus to the Department of Justice), 'who prosecutes on behalf of justice (or the Lady Justice).'"

I have a 2000 Volvo S70 that has a pretty dirty engine bay. Is it safe to apply de-greaser to the engine and pressure wash it off? Are there any areas where I should cover up before I clean it? Thanks in advance.
safe..not really..you always risk electrical problems

A small generator is better for the environment than solar panels. People have been lied to and mislead solar panels take more energy to make then they will every put out in there life time.Get a little Honda 500 watt generator and turn that sucker into a hybrid.

aviophage Doesn't have a grip on reality. In two weeks it would barley make the energy needed to heat a soldering gun to solder the wires to install it. Let alone smelt glass,silicon,steel and transport the material. Then after that point melt it again to make the cell lol. There is a reason why solar panels aren't cheap. If they didn't take a ton of energy to build them they wouldn't cost so much.Only reason you might get a payback in 7 years is because companies building them pay a lot less for energy. If they had to pay the price of "solar energy" you would never see a payback.

Power Investors: Smart Battery Companies Driving Electric Auto Deals for 2010
Hybrid and electric vehicles are center stage at this year’s Detroit Auto Show – and for good reason.
In addition to the buzz around concept cars from GM, Ford, Nissan and other traditional auto makers, Tesla, Fisker, Better Place and the other new guys in town are broadening the business and technology model for next-generation driving options. But remember to pay attention to those battery companies behind the curtain – they are about to climb into the driver’s seat for electric vehicle and smart grid innovation around the world.
As Cynthia Artin discusses in her Smart Money column this month, the connections among smart grid, smart auto and battery investment ecosystems are well established and will become even stronger in 2010. Announcements in the past few weeks put the spotlight on a new ecosystem balance of power, as companies in the battery segment become strategic ecosystem investors.
Fisker Automotive’s new $115 million round of venture capital includes a $23 million share from A123 Systems, which will also supply the advanced battery systems for the automaker going forward. After its September 2009 IPO helped to jumpstart the market last September, A123 has climbed to a $2 billion plus market capitalization – so the $23 million investment in Fisker may be just the beginning of its support for strategic ecosystem partners.
Ener1 another battery technology company with strategic electric vehicle partnerships, is tapping even deeper pockets in establishing a global ecosystem for batteries, smart autos and smart grid residential connections. In December, Ener1 reported a $20 million strategic investment from Itochu, a Japanese commercial trading company and distributor that has a long-standing relationship with EnerDel, the battery production division of Ener1 based in Indianapolis.
Itochu is an industry giant valued at about $100 billion, with strong interests in renewable energy utilities and automotive sectors as well as extensive real estate holdings in Japan. One of the projects that Itochu will support with Ener1 in Japan will be the installation of advanced battery systems for residential smart grid energy storage – starting with a pilot project in a new Tokyo residential complex. The model is to create a secondary market for the advanced batteries developed for electric vehicles. Using these batteries for power storage and for auto charging in residential settings will spread the cost of battery development and manufacturing, support smart grid load balancing and ultimately make the batteries themselves more affordable.
Commenting on this project, Charles Gassenheimer, CEO of Ener1 said, “We are pushing hard to drive pioneering initiatives like this to develop a secondary market for automotive grade lithium-ion batteries. I believe this secondary market will be a key enabler to reducing battery costs for automotive buyers and accelerating the growth of the market for electric powered vehicles.”
Naoki Ota, Chief Operating Officer for EnerDel noted, “These are the first projects anywhere in the world to bring all the critical elements of a smart, sustainable network that connects renewable energy and transportation in the places where people live and work.”
To round out this interconnected investor-investee relationship, Ener1 has made its own investment in an electric automaker. THINK, the Norwegian company behind the Think City electric car will move production to Ener1’s home state of Indiana after EnerDel’s investment made it at 31% shareholder in the previously struggling company. As with Fisker and A123, the EnerDel investment includes a strategic ecosystem partnership agreement –future Think City electric cars will incorporate Ener1 battery technology and THINK components will be incorporated into future projects with Itochu in Japan.
It may still be a small world, but the smart energy and smart auto ecosystems are expanding at an impressive clip. Discount Batteries:

Is there a solar powered window air conditioning unit?
Only need AC for one or two rooms. Wondering if there is a solar powered window unit for air conditioning?
I'm thinking that it would require unrolling the panels and either hanging them from the window, or placing them on the roof. Not sure. Thought I read something about it.
No, they only make solar powered clothes dryers. They cost near to nothing. Just rope and clothes pin's.
