Sander Vacuum
Sander Vacuum

I just got a used Kirby G3 vacuum with no attachments. Which attachments are worth getting?
I bought a G3 for $10 at a garage sale, it didn't come with ANY parts or attachments, and I had never heard of Kirby vacuums before. I am very impressed with how well it works. Now I am wondering if it is worth buying attachments for it. (I know there are lots of Kirby attachments on Ebay)
Kirby owners, please be honest, which attachments do you actually use? ... the shampooer? the sander? the head massager?
I've had my Kirby g3 for 17 years and to be honest the only attachments I use are the hose and little brush to vacuum the furniture with. I've used the carpet shampooer a few times, it scrubs good but doesn't suck up the water. I've never ever used the attachment to blow up balloons, nor the paint sprayer thing. I think you would be fine just getting the hose and the little brush that goes on the end. My vacuum still works as good as new. I've never had to have it repaired or rebuilt.=)

Automatic Transmission Fluid: Monthly Automotive Maintenance Part 4
For most automatic vehicles, the manufacturers suggest that the transmission fluid be checked every 30,000 to 40,000 miles. However, unless there is a noticeable issue, such as trouble shifting, most drivers forget all about maintaining their automatic transmission fluid. What eventually happens, is that by the time that a mechanic performs your regular maintenance tune-up, the repairs that you need are serious and expensive.
In part 4 of our “how to” series for monthly automotive maintenance, we are going to learn an easy to do, and easy to remember method of keeping our transmission fluid topped off, thereby keeping our engine running smoothly.
Checking the automatic transmission fluid
Tips to know before you start
1. Your owner’s manual will tell you which type of automatic transmission fluid you should be using. The two common types are Type F, and Dexron, also known as Mercron. Some carmakers, require specially designed, unique automatic transmission fluid for new models.
2. Automatic transmission fluid does not get used up, if your fluid level is low, then you need to find the leak.
3. When adding automatic transmission fluid, be very cautious, that the fluid does not accidentally come into contact with the exhaust manifold. If it does, it could cause a quick and furious engine fire.
The steps to take
1. Always check your operator’s manual before you perform this maintenance check on a vehicle for the first time. Some makes of car need to have the engine running for this, and some do not. You could end up in serious trouble if you use the wrong procedure.
2. Make sure the car is parked on a level part of the road or driveway.
3. Leave the engine running, in park or in neutral, and give the engine a chance to warm up thoroughly. Unless your owner’s manual states otherwise.
4. The reservoir for automatic transmission fluid is actually in the transmission, located near the back of the engine.
5. The dipstick for the automatic transmission fluid looks very similar to the dipstick for engine oil, once you locate it, pull it completely out, wipe it off, replace it, and now pull it completely back out again.
6. On the dipstick, you will see two distinct level markings, one for a warm level reading, and one for a cold level reading.
7. If the fluid level does not reach the full line for the warm reading, then you need to add transmission fluid.
8. Be very careful not to over fill, adding too much causes the fluid to foam, and it could splash you, causing minor to sever irritation, or even burns to your skin or eyes.
The automatic transmission fluid is a translucent, reddish color when it is in good, clean condition. If the fluid in your transmission is a dark, murky red, or a blackish hue, then you will most likely need to have the transmission fluid flushed. This is a maintenance measure, best done by someone who has done it before.

Tips For Protecting Your Hardwood Floor
Most people life to have plush carpet in their homes, because it's generally easier to deal with than hardwood floors. But hardwood floors have a beauty all their own and if taken care of properly, will last a long time.
There are two types of wood - hardwood and softwood. Hardwoods come from deciduous trees, whereas softwood trees come from conifer trees. However, nothing is simple, and some hardwoods are softer than softwoods! Balsa is considered to be a soft hardwood , while yew is a hard softwood.
When it comes to your flooring, you'll want to use hardwoods such as red oak, hard maple, silver maple, beech, white oak and American cherry. Many companies also offer "exotic" woods such Brazilian cherry, hickory, oak or teak, purpleheart, mahogany, or Tamarindo.
Hardwood flooring is described in terms of their "tones,"grains", and "hardness". Each type of wood has its own shades of colors and tones, types of grains, and degree of hardness to match any kind of decor you'd like in your home, more here: http://www.home-decorating-reviews.com/flooring/flooring.html
The main reason to put hardwood flooring in your home is because bare wood, properly cared for, is quite beautiful. However, depending on the climate where you live, hardwood floors might not be the best idea. Wood floors can be cold to the touch during wintertime, and if something heavy gets dropped on the floor, gouges can occur, no matter how hard the wood is! However, if you take the appropriate care these beautiful floors will last for a long time. (And indeed...if a carpet gets stained, the whole carpet generally needs to be taken up. Whereas, if a plank of wood is gouged, it's relatively easy to take up that plank and replace it with a pristine one.
By following a few simple tips, you'll be able to enjoy your hardwood floors for a lifetime.
Door mats
Place mats or rugs in front of doors, and make sure your visitors wipe their shoes off, or even better, takes their shoes off and walks around in socks. Dirt can be ground into the floor and ruin the finish.
Furniture
Never drag furniture over a hardwood floor. Lift the furniture - carry it to the spot you want it placed, and set it down. If the furniture is heavy - place felt contacts under the legs so that the furniture can be moved easily, but with no danger of scratching the wood.
Spills
Even if wood is treated to repel water, its always a good idea to wipe up spills immediately. Water can seep between the planks and cause damage.
The sun
Just as the sun can fade the upholstery on your furniture, it can fade your wood floors. So always keep your drapes drawn, or have the types of windows that can block out UV rays.
Cleaning
Don't use oil soaps. They build up and yellow the floor. Use neutral pH cleaners made specifically for wood floors.
Humidity
Your wooden floors expand and contract with the hear, and the amount of moisture in the air. It's a natural cycle, so don't worry if you suddenly see small gaps between floorboards. A room with a properly controlled temperature and humidity can prevent this from happening altogether, however.
By utilizing these simple tips, you'll protect your hardwood floors and keep them safe.

How do I lift linoleum off a concrete floor?
I have a room in my basement with linoleum over concrete floor. The linoleum is really badly damaged and I'd like to remove it. What is required to do this? Are there specific tools I'll need? Are there solvents needed?
Depending on the adhesive and how long it's been there, you can probably get the lino up with a flat shovel (snow shovels work!) and some elbow grease. You may find it easier to get up the tough bits if you heat the lino with a hair dryer to soften the adhesive.
You can also rent a special scraper for this from most rental houses, but they really don't work that much better than a flat shovel.
Try to avoid solvents, especially in a confined space like a basement, since they're bad for your lungs and usually are very flammable (gas water heater with a pilot light down there?!).
Try not to chip the concrete unless you're planning to level it with visquine or the like afterwards. If you're putting carpet or something thick back down on the concrete, you don't have to worry about getting every bit of adhesive off to make the floor even, since the carpet pad will deal with it. If you're putting vinyl sheet or tiles down, take the time to make the floor absolutely smooth or you'll get bumps in your new floor.
Good luck!
Good luck.
