Behind The Many Lines Of A Bar Code
By definition, a “bar code” is optical data which can be read by the scanning device of bar code equipment, which is then interpreted by software. Earlier bar codes used to come in the form of parallel black lines called linear or one-dimensional bar codes. Today, however, bar coding equipment can read all sorts of patterns, such as squares, dots, hexagons or other geometric patterns called two-dimensional matrix codes; and though these symbols are not bars, they are still referred to as bar codes.
The first bar code equipment was used in supermarket and retail stores to automate their checkout and point of sales systems. Bar code equipment has, since, been used in many other industries and for many other applications the world over. In fact, various types of bar codes and bar coding equipment are now available in the global market.
There are many components to bar code equipment; such as optical scanners or bar code readers, which (as the name implies) reads the bar codes scanned from an image utilizing special software, which is actually the same software used in Smartphone platforms. The other components of bar code equipment are the bar code printers, screen displays and central processing units (CPUs), which are compact, mobile and flexible to fit any type of space.
Possibly, the most recognizable component of bar coding equipment is the bar code scanner; which you can identify by the red laser lights that appear when a bar code is being scanned. As the main component of bar code equipment, bar code scanners utilize special decoding technology which can interpret bar codes up to 4.7 inches in length at a distance of up to 4.7 inches.
Bar code scanners contain no moving parts and may be used as hand-held devices or as fixed bar code equipment. The hand-held scanner is exceptionally lightweight and ergonomically designed to fit comfortably in your hand even for long periods of time. This bar coding equipment component can even scan low-quality or damaged bar codes with outstanding speed and accuracy. The other components of bar code equipment were designed to be mobile, light and compact so for space management purposes.
Bar coding equipment has, indeed, changed the world we live in greatly. Perhaps driven by the need for speedier and more accurate transactions, bar code equipment has become an indispensible part of our day-to-day lives.

can you scan a bar code off of an LCD Screen?
If you have a picture of a bar code, can a regular hand scanner read it?
Doubt it. UPC codes have magnetic strips I believe

5 Key Benefits of Using the Barcode Scanner
Barcode scanning gives many benefits to the users like it makes operation fast and efficient.
It provides 100 percent accuracy and better customer services and that improves the profile of organization database to get the better management of the scanner databases with user interface.
1. The barcode label has twelve characters and design as thin so that the keyboard operator needs enter twelve characters in just two keystrokes.
2. The normal keyboard operator get number of errors while entering the 1,000 characters at a time with using the barcode keyboard says wands enters error free barcode systems that makes accurate entry of nearly 3 million words without any error.
3. Once the barcode scanner scan all the data base than it is essential to use the proper user interface to enter the input data.
4. The barcode scanner is light handed so you can easily handle while scanning. You also need to read the instruction of barcode scanner to operate the bar code to avoid the error. It means, the handling of the barcode scanner is very easy and you can easily operate the scanner.
5. Barcode scanner is cost effective because it does not require the large investment and you can scan and manage the larger data to get the proper reliableness while collecting the database. Barcode systems not only gives accuracy but it also save time too.
The scan data base is very much important for the organization. The organization can set the user interface to utilize the database from the scanned sources. It is also protected with using the proper data management system with 100 percent perfection. Barcode Scanners use by the organisation to manage the accuracy as well as operational efficiency in data management.

Bar Socket
Bar Socket

Help me find this electrical socket please ?
My house has just been renovated with new sockets... and they're unusual. The left prong, is a T (rotated 90degrees clockwise), the right prong is a horizontal bar, and the bottom prong is the shape of a tunnel in cross-section. I'm in Antigua and can't find any adaptors on the island (at all) to convert to this socket. Can someone steer me where I may be able to find an adaptor to buy online (or have a friend buy in the UK). It doesn't matter what it comes "from"... I can multiadapt, if I could just get SOMETHING to plug in!
Let me clarify... my ELECTRICIAN could also not find adaptors on the island (although he could find the plugs). We've changed the plug on every electrical appliance in the house, except my computer, camera, travel stuff, etc. I need an adaptor to make these work, as I don't want to change these plugs
You have standard NEMA 6-20R receptacles which in the USA would be for a nominal 240V 20A circuit. The T-shaped left-hand (neutral) prong can take either the vertical prong of a 15A plug or the horizontal prong of a 20A plug. The right-hand (hot) prong is horizontal for 240V (if it were vertical this would be a NEMA 5-20R which is a lot more common in the 120V USA). Confirm this with your electrician, but in Antiguia I am guessing that these are 230V, 20A, 60Hz outlets. If your appliances are 230V (UK) then you do just need an adapter, but be aware that motor-driven appliances designed for 50Hz may have problems running on 60Hz. If your appliances are 120V (USA) then you'll need more than adapters--you will need transformers.
Ask your electrician if this is what he's looking for:

How to Connect the 2D Data Matrix Scanner
The UII marking of items are the efficient item management process of Government and private organizations. The UID data is engraved on the item or labels in the form of 2D data matrix symbols. The symbols are machine-readable codes and need to be decoded with a 2D data matrix scanner. The 2D data matrix scanner is an electronic device meant to interpret the printed barcodes on the items. Technologically, the device is developed with decoder circuitry that analyses the image data of the barcode and sends the interpreted data to the output port of the scanner.
Use of 2D data matrix scanner became widespread due to the use of 2D barcode symbols in the UII of the items. There are different methods of connection of the device depending on the usage.
Earlier, the barcode scanners of all formats used RS232 serial interface. The simple and electrical means of connection use easy and simple software, it needs to be written for particular computers and their serial ports though.
Proprietary interfaces are less common interfaces and were used with dedicated hardware. Wand emulation is another kind of output that decodes the raw wave. It can also convert the unrecognized symbologies into another kind of symbology that is easily recognized by the host device.
With the advent of innovative technologies, PCs has become the popular device. PCs and its standard keyboard interfaces are becoming convenient for any kind of user as they are easier to connect with physical hardware. With the commercial and general demand of reducing the complications of the associated software the ‘Keyboard Wedges’ have been introduced for connecting the 2D data matrix scanner. The ‘Keyboard Wedges’ is a hardware with characters from the barcode scanner appearing as if typed in through the keyboard and is attached between PC and its keyboard. This type of connection of the 2D data matrix scanner has simplified the use of the device. However, it has limitations in handling the content of the data matrix code.
Of course, these days, the USB connectors have replaced the keyboard ports for it is a more convenient hardware option. The easy integration of the scanner is retained by using a ‘software wedge’ in place of ‘keyboard wedge’.
PS/2 or USB cables are the becoming popular these days for connecting barcode scanners. The cables are connected with the 2D data matrix scanner at one end and the PS/2 keyboard port with another end. The data matrix codes are received by the host computer and converted keyboard input. Many scanner support the USB. Choices for the USB interface types are provided by many scanners. For instance, some of the devices have powered USB.
These days, most of the devices are being connected with wireless networking. The modern 2D data matrix scanners are also available with such facilities. The wireless enabled scanners are operated with the help of Bluetooth and WLAN. However, such devices use battery or rechargeable battery for their function which limit their time of operation.
With the changing technology the methods of connection of the 2D data matrix scanner is improving and being more user friendly.

Can I use a PCI SCSI card to replace an ISA SCSI card? It's for my Umax S-12 scanner.?
Hi there... I'm an intermediate PC veteran, & have largely stayed away from SCSI devices mostly due to price. However, I was recently given an Umax S-12 scanner. It comes with it's own controller card, which is an ISA interface. Now, as most of us know, only older PC's will have those slots since they have been phased out.
So I want to know if I can get a PCI SCSI card to replace the original. I think the ISA card is a 50-pin card. I know there are 50-pin cards available but am unsure of compatibility issues. Does this scanner only work w/ that card, or can it work w/ any SCSI card w/ the same # of pins? I'd like to know b4 I buy a card.
Any recommendations as to what kinda card to get? Cuz I'm sure not replacing my motherboard !! Thanks in advance !!
Thanx guys, that's a good start at least ... my motherboard does not have an on-board SCSI controller, so that's out. But since I'm SCSI ignorant, how do I know the difference between the types of SCSI ?? Thanks again...
Adaptec makes a bunch as long as you get the same type of connector (scsi-1, scsi-2, scsi fast-wide, etc) you can replace the isa card with a pci card.. The scanner will not know the difference. Adaptec is a quality name. Some motherboards offer a scsi interface as an optional add-on.

The Methodology of Upc Bar Codes
Have you always been curious to know how the bar codes that appear gibberish to us, actually work?
Go through your kitchen cabinet or refrigerator and on most of the items you will find zebra striped codes. Doesn't it rattles your mind as to what does it signify and where does it come from?
Well the answer is that a bar code is an optical machine-readable representation of data that represents data in the widths (lines) and the spacings of parallel line.
The UPC (Universal Product Code) on the other hand is one specific type of bar code among many others. They are incorporated to identify retail items or its products and comprise of two parts. The first is the machine readable bar code, that consists of several bars. The second part is the human readable numbers that one can find at the bottom of the UPC. The first six digit of the numbers is the manufacturer identification number and the rest are the item member. The person positioned by the manufacturer needs to ensure that the same code is not used for more than one item.
In fact, by looking at different UPC labels one can know which set of bars are associated with which number and then decoding them becomes very easy. They can be read by optical scanners, better known as bar code readers. When the bar code is run across a scanner, the scanner picks up the bar code by reading the spaces between them. It then transfers the information to the computer or the device attached. The computer further matches the records already stored with the bar code reading. The computer records may contain such information as price, number of items available, and other relevant information.
The numbers on the bar code play a very important role in the functioning of the UPC. The first six digits are the manufactures number that is allotted by UCC (Uniform Code Council). The next five numbers are specific item's identification number. The last digit is the check digit that lets the scanner know if the UPC code was scanned in correctly, thus helping the scanner to retain the price and other details of the product, correctly.
The benefits of using UPC in retail markets and various other places are many. Firstly it helps the manufacturer as well as the customers, a lot in keeping the price more accurate as it avoids one to indulge in manual calculation. By scanning, the chances of error is extremely minimal. It is also acts auxiliary in keeping the company or store cognizant as to how much of an item is still in stock with them, hence aid them in keeping their inventory updated.
Each time the scanner scans an item, it not only performs impeccable calculation but when the check digit it calculates is different from the check digit it reads, the scanner gets to know that something id wrong and the item needs to be rescanned. It is this advantage that has made UPC bar code readers ubiquitous everywhere in the markets.

Police scanner code for K9 unit, narcotics search, or runaway suspect?
I don't know if some of those exists. It's for a research paper. Some form of a code that refers to the K9 unit or scent detection/searching would do. Thanks in advance.
Every police department in the country uses different codes and signals for police dispatch. There are no across the board standard. About the only one that every agency in the country uses is the "10-04" which means 'yes' or that you are acknowledging something.
That said......... In the agency where I work... a very large one, there are no codes for what you are asking. If I want a K9, I just ask radio dispatch to send me a K9 unit. But there is no code or signal for them
If we are doing a search.... there is no code for that... The code for narcotics in my agency is "signal 39" .. so I might ask radio "Send my a K9 unit for a 39 search".
For K9 units... different dogs are for different things. They may be trained in search / suspect apprehension or for drugs or for explosives or for locating cadavers / rescue dogs.
And for a runaway.... we use the code "signal 8". That refers to any missing person or runaway juvenile.
