Two Cheap Volkswagen Upgrades (part 2)
Two More Inexpensive VW UpgradesIn the first part of this series, we talked about two inexpensive upgrades that improve performance. First, an upper stress bar to improve handling, and second, a cold air intake to improve horsepower and add some growl. In this part we’ll to cover some more ground in the world of suspension enhancements. After all, you want to get your VW GTI or Jetta out into some curves don't you? If so, you’ll need some quality products to keep you on the road.
One of the two greatest concerns, when it comes to ripping the road, is suspension stiffness. Usually when suspension stiffness is modified, you also tend to modify your center of gravity, otherwise deemed 'Ride Height'. For about $225.00, a fellow dubber can obtain a set of fine quality H&R Springs. Options include the H&R Sport Springs, which tend to be stiffer than stock, but not absurdly so. The H&R Race Springs, very stiff, and not very comfortable for everyday ride. If you have a Golf or Jetta, then H&R's Sport Springs are going to make night and day difference alone. If you have a GTI, you already know that the ride can be a bit rough, and going to a set of Race Springs is going to make it a bit worse. A rude awakening for most. For a GTI owner, a set of Sport Springs should do the trick.
Let's quickly review what's entailed in a spring replacement. First, you'll need a set of Craftsman Strut Spring Compressor Tool with Built-In Safety Pins from Sears. They run about $50.00. Now if you're trying to be scrappy, you can always take these back when done. Just clean them up with a little WD-40 when you're finished.
The back is going to be harder than the front in a way, as you're probably going to have to tear apart some interior. No worries though, it all snaps together/apart. Loosen your lug nuts on the first set of wheels while the car is on the ground. Pop the hood and loosen the strut tower nuts. Place a block or two behind the tires that will remain on the ground. (just in case) Jack one end of the car up one side at a time and place your jack stands under the front cross-member. (this has always worked for me) Pull off the first wheel, and remove bolts according to the Bentley Manual for your Golf or Jetta. Shimmy that strut out of there as a whole unit.
Once the strut is on the ground, go ahead and use the Strut Spring Compressor Tool to get the spring compressed. Be sure to keep the sides as even as possible! Once you feel you've gotten the spring compressed, unscrew the nut at the top of the strut tower. Everything should come apart relatively easily. Slide your existing spring off, and slide the new lower and stiffer springs on. You may not even need to compress the new springs when putting everything back together. When done, slide the entire strut back into place, and follow the above steps in reverse order. Voila! One down, three more to go!
The second largest concern in tearing through turns is, making sure the car doesn't sway in corners. Flailing, swaying, body-roll, etc. can all lead to disaster when cornering hard. The objective is to keep the car from shifting as much as possible when turning. There's a great deal of expensive hardware in existence to help this out, but let's stay focused on the cheap, but effective items. The cheap solution? An Eibach Sway Bar & Anti-Roll Kit! Price? Ballpark cost is around $350.00, shipped. The heavier gauge steel used in these sway bars is significant improvement over the stock sway bars. Yes, you have existing sway bars, but they're weak. Thus, the recommended upgrade.
Let's quickly review the install process for your Eibach Sway Bar & Anti-Roll Kit. Pick the front or back of the car to start. Place a block or two behind the tires that will remain on the ground. (just in case) Jack one end of the car up one side at a time and place your jack stands under the front cross-member. (this has always worked for me) Get some light under the car and look for the stock sway bar. Locate the nuts/bolts that hold it in place, and begin to loosen them. You may need an allen wrench and a box wrench in order to remove the existing sway bar. You'll understand this when you see it. Once bolts are removed, go ahead and finagle the bar out from underneath the car. Repeat these steps in reverse in order to get the new sway bar in place. Drop some grease on those bushings. Rinse, lather, repeat for other end of car. Thanks Eibach!
For the average Joe, the two of these upgrades combined provide substantial improvement over the stock equipment. Combine them with the two items in Part I of this series, and you should find your car riding on rails like you were at Six Flags Magic Mountain.

what brands of tools do mechanics in china and japan and similar places use?
in america we have craftsman, snap-on and the like. if you buy cheap tools made in china or japan they're low quality and depending on what you buy you get little use out of it before it breaks. cheap hand tools like wrenches and ratchets are okay but they still don't hold up compared to more expensive brands.
my question is what what do mechanics in china and japan and similar places use? they can't be using the same cheap tools that they export to us.
Yeah, I live in Japan and see the Snap-on truck cruising around once in a while. I'm sure they use some other brand too, but I've never taken a close look.

How To Paint Your Classic Car Like A Pro
How To Paint Your Classic Car Like A Pro After the finish body work is done, and your primer has been sanded to 600 grit wet, you can mask your classic car, and get ready for paint, if your lucky you can rent a paint booth for a day to paint the car, if renting a paint booth is the plan, you should wait to mask your car, until you get there.
I always suggest that you rent a booth, unless you have a garage that you can clean, blow out, and hose down until it's absolutely dust free, if there is any dust around your car, it will be in the paint in the end, where if you rent a paint booth, they are usually kept clean, all you have to do is water the floors.
Now that you ready to paint your car, no matter where you have chosen to do the work, you need to be sure that you have all of the supplies that you need, because once you start to paint, you can't just stop and make a run to the paint supply store, below I'll add a list of the supplies you need. Supply List
- 1) Paint
- 2) sealer
- 3) reducer
- 4) Catalyst
- 5) Tack Cloths, preferably designed for clear coat
- 6) Measuring Cups
- 7) Stir Sticks

- 10) Respirator in working order
- 11) Paint Prep Cleaner
The list above is a list of the supplies that you'll need to paint your classic car, you cannot skimp on this list to save money, you will need every item on it, so be ready to spend some money on it, on average your supplies will cost between $600.00 and $2,000.00 depending on what you use to paint your car.
Now that we know that the car is masked, we'll prep clean it, this will clean any contaminants off of the surface of the primer, after you have done this you can tack cloth the car, this is done to remove small dust particles from the surface of the car.
Now I will give you a few things to think about, when painting with metallic paints then you must pay allot attention to the settings on your paint gun.
Metallic paints will tend to get lighter if the pressure goes up and darker if it goes down, your fluid flow and fan on your gun will also effect this.
Now I will give you a basic mixing chart, most paints will follow this chart. Instructions
1) get your paint ready to pour.
2) make sure that your mixing cup is clean.
3) Get your strainer and sticks.
4) Put a strainer in the top of the measuring cup.
5) Now pay close attention to the level of paint in the cup. Paint Mixing Table.
Always be sure to read and follow the paint manufactures mixing guide lines.
These mixing ratios are just a basic idea of what to do, things will change with different manufactures.
Recommended Air Pressure At Gun Head.

Primer Coat When using a spray gun, you try to achieve a certain spray pattern of spray coming out of the gun, this is done by adjusting the air pressure at the tip of the spray gun, also the fan of the paint, and fluid flow of the paint, all of these factors will make, or break your paint work.
What your looking for in a perfect spray pattern is very simple, it will consist of a fan 4-6 inches wide, that has no dry spot in the middle, or heavy spot on either end of the spray fan, once you achieve this type of spray coming from the gun, your ready to go.
Remember do not test you spray pattern on the paint booth wall, or on your car, take a piece of masking paper, and hang it on the wall of the booth, and use that to test your spray gun, if you rented my booth, and sprayed on the wall of it, I would charge you to remove the paint from the wall.
You should always follow the manufactures recommended paint mixes, and spray pressure, the manufacture know more about their product then anybody else does, if you follow what they sat to the letter, your paint should look great.

Reusable Air Dunnage Bags
Even when a truck appears to be fully loaded with goods, there can still be large spaces between items, and this can mean that goods are able to slide around and get damaged during transit. This period of time, between dispatch from the factory or warehouse and arrival at the final destination is when goods are most valuable, and any damage at this stage will cause large costs, which will have a great impact on overall profitability unless measures such as air dunnage bags are used in order to give goods in transit the best possible protection from damage.
When goods are packed onto a pallet, it is very rare for them to be stacked right to the edge. This means that there is space left around the stacked boxes, and allows for a small degree of movement to take place when in the back of the truck. While a small amount of movement within the bounds of the stretch wrap will always take place, over time, this can cause the wrapping to come loose, and cause items to fall out of place, and break.
There are a number ways to minimize movement of items in transit, including placing bars across the truck to separate loads, and stacking a second pallet on top of the first to make them more secure, but both of these methods reduce the amount of available space in the truck and have an impact on profit. There is however a third way of protecting goods in transit, and this is through the use of air dunnage bags.
Quite simply, air dunnage bags are sturdy inflatable bags that fit in between the stacks of goods and prevent them from moving around too much. They are inflated using a standard nozzle, and then can be slid into place between the goods. The bags take a matter of seconds to inflate, and can be put into place along with the goods as the truck is loaded.
Once the truck arrives at its final destination, the dunnage bags can be removed with the load, and then either discarded or reused depending on their condition. Easy Rack provides a number of different options when it comes to their offering of air dunnage bags. The air bags come in a choice of sizes. Either 48 inches by 26 inches, or a much larger 48 inches by 48 inches. Both have been designed to match up with individual standard sized pallets.
In order to encourage reuse, the air bags have a high quality pressure seal that holds the bags up at up to 6 psi, while the twin skin of a polyethylene inner bag protected by a hard wearing polypropylene outer, means that they will stand up to quite a lot of punishment in use.
The cost of these air dunnage bags is low, and because they do not take up any usable space within a truck, they will have no impact on how much can be carried. As such, their use should be considered on all delivery trucks, because by better protecting items in transit, they will have a significant positive impact on the profitability of every single journey.

ANALYZING FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF BANKS USING THE LACE RATING SYSTEM
Generally, it is very essential to find out the financial health of any instituion and more particularly Banking institution in india and abroad.One of the performance tool is LACE Rating and hence its stability is to be observed. Downward trends in the financial ratings indicate deterioration in the organizations financial condition. Continuous changes in the financial ratings may be indicative of instability. Banking organizations having low ratings (C, D or E) are likely to have financial problems and for this reason the accompanying ratios should be carefully evaluated.
LIQUIDITY
Liquidity in banking is very difficult to measure because a bank's liquidity position changes daily. Thus by the time the bank's financial data are processed, the ratios may not represent its current position. However, one must measure liquidity in the best possible way because it is the lack of liquidity which may bring about the closing of the bank if financial problems become known.
Two ratios are shown under the liquidity heading. The ratio of TI-VL/A.ASTS measures liquid assets minus volatile liabilities divided by average assets, which gives the net liquidity position relative to the bank's size. The ratio will vary considerably by the size of bank, with smaller banks having higher ratios on the average than larger banks. The ratio of LNS/AST stands for total loans to average assets. Generally speaking, the more banks are loaned up, the less likely they are able meet unforeseen deposit withdrawals.
ASSET QUALITY
Banks generally fail because of bad loans. For this reason, the ratio of nonperforming assets to capital should be reviewed, especially in relation to the bank's current and future earnings position. Banks having a nonperforming asset ratio to capital approaching 100 percent or greater and negative earnings are likely to be struggling for survival.
When evaluating asset quality, one should compare the ratio of CHARGEOFFS/ASSETS to the ratio of LOSS RSRV/ASTS (loan-loss reserve ratio). Under normal conditions, the loan-loss reserve ratio should be around the 1.25 percent level. If the level of nonperforming assets or the level of charge-offs is above normal, the loan-loss reserve ratio should be higher to cover future losses.
CAPITAL
In measuring capital, one should focus on the leverage ratio (basically equity capital-to- assets). This ratio should be six percent or higher for large banks and eight percent or higher for smaller banks. Important to a bank's capital position is a strong and steady growth in earnings with a low dividend payout ratio. This allows earnings to be retained for capital.
EARNINGS
The most important earnings ratios are those that represent the bottom-line of the income statement, mainly the ratios of income to assets or pretax income on a tax equivalent basis to assets. A return on capital ratio may be misleading because banks can increase the ratio through higher leveraging.
Analysis of bank earnings should begin with the net interest income ratio, which has been adjusted for tax equivalency. Higher this ratio the better, especially in relationship to other peer banks. The interest income, net interest income, and pretax income ratios should all be evaluated on a tax equivalent basis, which adds back to the income stream tax benefits. The no interest income ratio has become more important to banks in recent years because the deregulation of interest rates has narrowed net interest margins and has caused banks to rely more on fee income.
The overhead ratio should be looked at with caution because a bank's cost will vary by its type of operation. Retail consumer-oriented banks with a large branch network should have higher overhead costs and higher margins than banks specializing in wholesale banking. The ratio of provisions to the loan-loss reserve should also be evaluated in relation to the bank's margins. Higher provisions generally mean there are loan problems. However, further evaluation should be made by looking at the ratio of nonperforming loans to assets and at the bank's net interest margins. Sometimes higher risks can be offset by higher returns, but careful analysis should be made before making such a deduction. The pretax income ratio (put on a tax equivalent basis) allows one to evaluate the bank's overall earning strength without the effects of extraordinary items or tax credits.
From the aforesaid discussion, it is felt that, The main purpose of using this tool is to examine the validity and the reliability of financial ratios in an international comparison. The relationship between international accounting practices and the comparability of financial ratios will be considered. The outcome is to find out which financial ratios are the most appropriate tools in the international context, i.e. when comparing companies operating in different countries.

Hydraulic Motor and Its Types
Hydraulic motor is a motor that converts the kinetic or potential energy of a fluid into mechanical energy. It is a mechanical actuator that converts hydraulic pressure and flow into torque and angular displacement.
It can rotate in reverse direction and act as a pump when powered by a mechanical source. Although a hydraulic motor can be interchangeable with a hydraulic pump sometimes, most often, hydraulic pumps cannot be used as hydraulic motors because they cannot be backdriven. The hydraulic drive system can be formed by hydraulic pumps, motors, and cylinders.
There are many hydraulic motor types which are the most important operating specification to consider when searching for hydraulic motors. The first one is the gear and vane motors. They can be used in simple rotating systems. A vane motor consists of a housing with an eccentric bore, in which runs a rotor with vanes in it that slide in and out. It uses a vane to generate mechanical energy. Pressurized fluid strikes the blades in the vane, causing it to rotate and produce output torque. While a gear motor consists of two gears, i.e. the driven gear and the idler gear. The second type is the axial piston motor which is generally used for high quality rotating drive systems. It uses an axially-mounted piston to generate mechanical energy. High pressure flow into the motor forces the piston to move in the chamber, generating output torque. The third one is the radial piston motors which are available in Crankshaft type and the Multilobe cam ring type. This motor uses pistons mounted radially about a central axis to generate energy.
Addition to the above mentioned elements, there are still many aspects to consider when searching for hydraulic motors. It includes the operating torque, operating pressure, operating temperature, operating speed, and the maximum fluid viscosity, etc. As to the operating torque, it depends directly on the pressure of the working fluid delivered to the motor. And the operating pressure is the pressure of the working fluid that is pressurized by an outside source delivered to the hydraulic motor. The operating temperature is the fluid temperature range the motor can accommodate. The operating speed is the speed at which the hydraulic motors' moving parts rotate.
Undoubtedly, hydraulic motors can be widely used in many applications such as winches and crane drives, roll mills, self-driven cranes, and excavators and so on. Therefore, it is rather necessary to take all the above mentioned aspects into consideration when you choose the hydraulic motors.

How does an auto transmission's hydraulic pump work?
I am converting an SUV to electric motor powered. When the transmission needs to shift I can cut the power to the motor, "disengaging" it from the transmission. Additionally, the motor doesn't idle, so I have no way to keep hydraulic pressure in the transmission at a standstill. I want to remove the torque converter and power the hydraulic pump externally. Is this possible, or can I use an external pump?
The way an automobile engine with a automatic transmission works is essentially a hydrostatic hydraulic system. If you have for example, a 200 hp engine the engines output is connected to the automatic's transmission hydraulic pump. So that pump is actually consuming all the energy of that engine and the hydraulic flow is directed to the torque converter and gears to give motive power.
You could bypass the transmissions built in hydraulic pump, but it is difficult and a waste of a good pump. A better solution might be to keep the excellent efficient pump that is built into the transmission and come up with a diverter of the hydraulic flow so that when you don't need the flow it just loops around in a flow circuit.
This is similar to a power steering pump which doesn't consume power when it is on, but the moment you turn the wheel a hydraulic valve is opened and the hydraulic fluid is allowed to flow into a cylinder and turn the car wheels in the direction you point to
So if you can get a diagram of your SUV's automatic transmissions hydraulic circuitry, you can buy a hydraulic valve in between the hydraulic pump and the torque convertor. So when you don't want the transmission to add to the drag, just divert the flow away from the converter and loop it back to the pump.

What is the best way to disconnect the fitting on the end of the alumunim part of the heater hose.?
It runs up over the passenger side valve cover into the top of the block right below the throttle body, and the fitting on the end of the aluminum/steel piece of hose where it connects to that part of the block is very tight and very hard to get loose to remove it. It's on a 1987 S10 2.8L V6.
I need to get the steel pipe part out of the top of the block.
these are press in they are tuff to get out as they arnt designed to remove you wiggle them around and it will come out eventually

What does "32 mm" in an M5 x 32 mm wing nut refer to?
I have purchased an assortment of Wing Nuts from eBay that covers various sizes. Two of the sizes are M5 x 24 mm and M5 x 32 mm. What would the difference be exactly? Both of them have a diameter of 5 mm (I have measured them with a metric ruler)...

The first number refers to the diameter of the bolt and the second number refers to the pitch. The pitch is calculated as the distance between any two threads.
An M5 bolt will have a pitch of .8 mm. There is no other pitch used for an M5 bolt. The 24 or 32 would refer to the length of the bolt in mm. from the underside of the head to the tip. Not sure how this would apply to a "wing nut" which is a nut that is made to be removed without the help of a wrench.
