What You Need to Know About Changing Your Oil, That Your Car Manufacturer Will Never Tell You!
An oil change is an oil change right? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Don't get another Oil change until you read this report.
Q: Do I really need to change my oil every 3,000 to 3,500 miles? My owner's manual says I can go 5,000, 7,000 or even 10,000 miles doesn't it?
A: Technically yes it does say that, but read the not so fine print. You can only do that if you drive under light service. Guess what, 95% or more of us drive under the 'Severe' or 'Extreme' conditions as described in most owners manuals. Yep, that's everyday stop and go driving, commuting, quick trips to the store, etc.
If you drive like that, as 95% of us do, you need to change your oil every 3,000 to 3,500 miles OR every 3 months.
Q: If I only drive a few hundred miles a month can I stick to the 3,000 or 3,500 mile guideline?
A: No! You need to change your oil at least every 3 months. Remember oil isn't just for lubricating it's also for cleaning and has what are called, 'detergents' and 'additives' in the oil that suspend all the bad crud, dirt, sludge, etc. in the oil so it doesn't stick inside your engine and gum up the works, so to speak.
If oil is left in the engine to long the 'detergents' and 'additive' break down then the dirt and sludge will stick to the metal and clog the tiny oil lubricating passages in your engine.
It's just like how cholesterol in your body clogs up your veins then you don't get enough blood where you need it. When the oil passages clog in your engine the oil doesn't get where it needs to be. It can cause thousands of dollars in engine repairs. You gotta get that crud out of there to make your engine run right and last longer.
Q: What are some of the problems you have seen from people not changing oil often enough?
A: BMW, says change your oil with synthetic every 10,000 miles. But I've found when you do this the normal moisture from the engine running does not get out of the engines oil.
In winter that moisture can freeze the passage closed that vents excess pressure out of the engine. When the pressure builds up too high it has to escape somewhere. I've seen it make engine seals leak or even pop out completely loosing almost all the engines oil, valve covers warp the oil can get in the catalytic converter destroying it causing thousands of dollars worth of damage.
Toyota has had major problems with oil gelling in oil pans (just like Jell-O). When that happens, it starves the engine for oil. VW, Audi & Saab have major problems with the tube that sucks the oil from the oil pan into the oil pump clogging. Once clogged it also starves the engine of oil. Volvo piston rings get stuck scraping cylinder walls and seizing the engine solid, and on and on. They don't tell you about these problems because they want to sell more cars!
Q: Is there a difference in types of oil and brands?
A: Yes, to some degree. But a lot of it is just 'marketing hype'. Each manufacturer has their own blend of additive packages and detergents that they add, but today most cars use a blended oil with a weight of 5-30 for cold weather driving, and 10-30 for warm weather driving. The 5-30 lets the oil get thinner and flow at colder temperatures than the 10-30. No matter what type of oil you use the most important thing to do is change it often.
Q: What about 'Synthetic Oil', is it worth the extra cost?
A: Yes if you drive a high performance import car or drive a race car, but even then you'd change the oil after each race. Generally the answer's No, you pay more but as I said the 2nd role of oil is to clean your engine and trap or suspend the dirt and crud. That means you still must clean out the oil regularly even synthetic oil.
Synthetic oil does flow better in extreme cold. But, is it worth the extra cost when most manufacturers and mechanics still suggest you change synthetic oil every 5,000 miles at the most? Let me put it this way, if you bought expensive toothpaste would you brush your teeth less often?
Q: What problems do you see and hear about most often with the Fast or Quick Oil Change places?
A: I'll just list a few, there are the obvious horror stories of wrong filters put on, loose leaking or stripped drain plugs, putting too much or not enough oil in or adding the wrong fluids.
1. Take a look at who's doing the work. How much experience do think they have working on cars.
2. Take a look at their tools, are they SAE? Metric? Or more likely just a vise grip, screwdriver, and an oil filter wrench?
3. These places almost NEVER replace the oil drain plug gasket. This can cause leaks of oil onto your garage floor or even worse you could loose all your oil. Yes this really does happen!
4. Since they're not technicians how much of a total vehicle inspection can they really do? Sure they can check the fluid levels and tire pressures. Let's face it, typically it takes about 30-45 minutes to properly inspect your car and perform an Oil Change with all the right parts, tools, gaskets, filters, etc.
They have to do it in under 10 minutes to make money, how much time can they take with your car? Sure they'll do it fast but is that what you really want? If you got a checkup from a doctor would you want the fastest one or the most thorough, even if it took a little longer?
5. Don't fall for all those extra things they often try to sell you. I'm talking about - higher quality oil, synthetic oil, additives, wiper blades, PCV valves, air filters. And additional charges for import car filters and oil if you need over 4 or 5 quarts.

Should I buy Metric or SAE?
I want to buy my husband a set of wrenches but I'm not sure whether I should get metric or SAE...he does a lot of work on our cars. I'm sure he'd eventually want both sets but which is better to start with?
We have a Ford focul, Mazda tribute, a Chevy Nova and a sea-doo.
...But if I wanted to buy one to start with...is it a toss up?
If he's doing lots of work on vehicles, he will eventually need both. But it's a good idea to start with Metric. Even domestic cars are mostly metric fasteners these days.
And here's a bit of unsolicited advice. If you're going to buy tools, buy quality tools! To quote my father regarding tools. "If you buy the best, you only have to cry once."

Choosing the Right Air Compressor For Your Home Improvement Needs
When it comes to succeeding with our at home DIY tasks, having the correct tools is almost as important as being in the know about how to perform the task at hand correctly. If you are interested in home improvement or have been researching on the subject in order to be able to complete a specific DIY task, you may or may not be aware of what an air compressor is. An air compressor is the favourite tool of many home improvement fans as it makes nailing and installing moulding easier than they ever thought possible.
They allow for ease when powering tools such as wrenches, paint sprayers and grinders - all in all they have a wide range of uses and are a must for any home when it comes to performing a multitude of tasks. However, if you are a bit of a novice when it comes to tools, you may be slightly unsure of how exactly to choose the right air compressor for your needs, which is actually a lot easier than many may think.
You do not necessarily need to be able to know the ins and outs of the scientific angle of how an air compressor works, but you do need to have a small understanding of how it works in order to be able to use it correctly. Put into simple terms, a compressor works with compressed gas which is stored in a tank. When you release the compressed air in short bursts, the pressure of the air which is escaping will be at a strength that is then able to power a wide range of tools.
Once you understand the basics of how an air compressor works, you can start comparing various air compressors by the level of airflow they provide. This can be measured by looking at the statistics they show, which will either be measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM) or standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM). In most cases, air compressors will be labelled with this level at around 90 pounds per square inch. When comparing these sizes, be aware that most large power tools will require an airflow of 10 cubic feet, whilst smaller appliances will need only 1-5 cubic feet per minute.
One you have established the different air flow levels different models will provide you with, you should then think about what your needs for the air compressor are as different tasks will require different air flow measures, etc. The smaller the storage tank, the smaller the tools in which you will be able to power; so if you are requiring the air compressor to power large tools, it is best to look at compressors which come which larger storage tanks. This is because smaller appliances such as a wrench will only require a short burst of air in order to work, so less air is required during its use.
Next you should think about where you intend to use your air compressor. This is because the environment in which you choose to use it is will affect the decisions you make in terms of what kind of motor you will require. Compressors to be used within the home should be bought with an electric motor as this is safer and will create no harmful exhaust fumes. If you are looking to use your compressor outdoors on big jobs, a gasoline-powered compressor will be more advantageous as it will be much more powerful and you will have ventilation from the exhaust fumes from being in the outdoors.
In most cases, air compressors can be very easy to carry and handle, but dependent on whether your compressor is a vertical or horizontal one will determine how easy it is to store. Vertical compressors generally take up less space, but when deciding on the motor, also take into consideration how you will move it and use it safely as in some cases gasoline powered compressors may require more than one person to move them due to their weight.
Once you have taken all of these points into consideration, you will be well informed on which type of air compressor is best for you and your needs. By choosing one which will perfectly fit the needs of your home improvement rather than opting for the biggest and heaviest model, you will not only be provided with a more efficient compressor, but will also be able to complete your home improvement tasks with ease and success.

Ease your heavy weight work with Lift Tables
Ever wondered what would life be without lift tables? Construction work, or rather all industry sectors would all come to a standstill. These equipments are indeed a boon from the annals of modern science and technology. Just like these lifts, engine hoist are too an integral part of construction sector, where heavy duty weights are transferred from one place to the other everyday.
Lift tables varieties
These material handling equipments come in different varieties. There are this typical off-the-shelf "Made in China" variety, then there are those with manual hand pump, electric motor AC or DC or even ones with air motor powered hydraulic pumps. Some manufacturing groups even offer a powered telescopic boom option so the extension boom can be operated even with a load! There are also customized varieties of lift tables. This is because some companies manufacture lift tables, as per the needs of their customers. While procuring one, always ask for an industrial supply catalog, so that you can get the one that fulfills your requirements.
Customized varieties
The customized varieties of lift table available online on different websites are many. One of the companies has a customized Super-Master Crane that has mast rotation, which can be outfit with hand crank or powered rotation, allowing the load to be positioned without having to re-position the crane. Some customized cranes come with a self-propelled drive for optimal mobility. Then there are groups that modify their Material Handling Equipment by providing a longer boom when they need higher reach, or making certain portions removable so that it can be more easily stored or transported. Some even provide a fully powered unit with all the bells and whistles.
Placing orders online
From the above you now have a fairly good idea that it is always advisable to place orders for these equipments such as engine hoist online. For then you can research different websites and finally narrow down as per your individual requirements. You can also get customized ones as and when required from some of the best companies located the world over. This is the ultimate advantage of placing orders for lift tables online i.e. you get to order as per international standards.
About the Author
I have written many articles. But my field of interest is to write for the practical application practiced in industries for manufacturing products. I have written article on cherry picker and engine hoist
Nathan Syngrem
engine hoists are some times called cherry pickers. Why?
Any hydraulic actuated boom device, such as an engine hoist could be classified as a "cherry picker". Bucket trucks are also called cherry pickers. Here is a little more info from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry_picker
A cherry picker. also known as a boom lift is a device that consists of a bucket at the end of a hydraulic lifting system, usually mounted on the back of a large vehicle such as a truck (in which case it is also called a bucket truck), or sometimes a stand-alone trailer. The bucket is designed for a person to stand in, and work from. Often a duplicate set of controls that are used to manipulate the position of the bucket will be available to the person in the bucket, allowing the operator to position himself. The lifting arms of some cherry pickers are capable of telescoping to adjust the reach of the device.
Cherry pickers were originally designed for use in orchards (not just cherry orchards). It lets the picker pick fruit high in a tree with relative ease. Similar devices, also known as 'cherry pickers' are also used to service telephone, cable television and electrical equipment on utility poles. Some fire trucks have a cherry picker instead of a fire ladder (known as a Snorkel), and some window cleaners also use them. Cherry pickers are also used in mining, construction, and sometimes by arborists to work safely in otherwise unclimbable trees.

How To Easily Remove Excessive Thorns From Your Roses
Though beautiful, a rose can hurt. After all, every rose has its thorns. All sorts of myths symbolize the danger of these little daggers. According to Greek Mythology, Cupid shot arrows into a rose bush after he was stung by a bee, and the pain from his arrow thus caused the thorns to sprout.
Don't cry though if these sharp points have poked you more than once. You took can remove these little darts and create a smooth stemmed rose with just a little care and patience.
Note this: thorns have a purpose. They help the plant drink water, and thus when you remove the thorn, you should be careful to not inflict any excessive damage to the stem. Utilize a proper dethorning technique to avoid injuring the rose. Carelessly dethorning a rose will shorten the life of the flower as the peeled or torn skin will hinder the amount of water the stem can take.
When removing the thorns, you have two choices: wait until the stem is cut or do it while the stem is still attached to the plant. Remove the thorns while the plant is still young and before the rose blooms if you know that a gardener will be cutting the stem in the future for display or for a bouquet. To remove the thorns, apply slight pressure to the sides and then push them off the stem. Do the same with cut stems.
A thorn stripper will help you dethrone roses as well. This strips the stem of leaves and thorns. You can make your own with metal strapping from a hardware store, but if you do, file the edges that touch the flower so you do not tear the stem excessively.
To dethrone the stem with this homemade tool, hold it below the flower and then close the jaws around the stem. Don't use too much pressure because you could damage or even sever the stem. Drag the dethorner down the stem and watch the thorns pop off. Getting the hang of using this tool will take time, but practice makes perfect, and soon you'll know exactly how much pressure to use.
A knife works well to remove thorns as well. Just scrape the stem of the rose with a sharp floral or pairing knife. When removing the thorns from a cut stem, consider removing just the thorns and leaves below the water level.
Think carefully about the look of the rose before trying to remove every thorn and leaf. Consider the flower's use, and then remove thorns as necessary. Again, dethorning the flower can shorten its life, so don't overdo it.
Consider dethorning especially when you need more plant litter for your compost pile. The extra thorns and stems will help build up your lacking pile, and in the end, make handling flowers safer to for you to work with.

How can I easily remove number plates that have been glued to my car?
Basically I've bought a new car and the plates are glued on and not screwed on, so I need to change them and I really don't want to damage my car removing them.
Depends on where they are glued to, and type of glue. However acetone(fingernail polish remover) usually will soften glue up enough to remove it.
