do i need a new alternator ,battery or extra battery?
i have a pioneer prs-d4000f 1200w amp for my 4 speakers and a jl audio slash v2 1000/1v2 amp for my two subwoofers.
what do i need to make this system run without any problems and without bad treating it? do i need a new alternator ,battery or other extra battery?
Rule of thumb...
If your total system power is a 1500 watts RMS or more you will need to:
1. Upgrade the alternator to a high output alternator
2. Upgrade to a heavy duty deep cycle battery
3. Upgrade the "Big 3" - that is to replace (or add to) the power wire between the battery and alternator, the ground from the battery to the chassis and the ground strap from the engine/tranny to the chassis with at least 2 AWG wire.
Failure to do this will result in you replacing them anyway as the alternator will eventually fail.
Here is a guide that will calculate what size alternator and power wires you need as well how to set the gain http://www.datafilehost.com/download.php?file=6d26c621
You'll need Microsft Excel to use it. If you don't have Excel, use this link http://www.box.net/shared/nkkw1dhk4g
A second battery is never a good idea as it's just an added strain on the alternator unless you plan on running the system with the engine off.
A cap is only good so far as the audio system isn't trying to pull too much from the electrical system. A cap doesn't provide more power, it's designed to 'stiffen' the voltage to the amp, nothing else. If the current isn't there, a cap won't help.

3 Manufacturers of Portable Air Compressors You'll Want to Consider
Air compressors are just plain cool. They save tons of time and allow the user to work efficiently and easily. The many uses of them go on and on, and their obvious benefit and value in so many different situations makes them a must have item for most shops. I worked for a couple hours today on installing some cedar siding on a wood shed. Without the compressor that job would have taken me much much longer. It was a huge time saver. The thought of fumbling around with a hammer and some finish nails just drives me crazy. If you have used a nail gun before then you know how indispensable they really are. Without the compressor, the nail gun just wouldn't work.
In this article I want to move beyond making a list of the many uses for them. I also want to move beyond a discussion of how they work. Rather, I thought a brief but focused discussion about some of the portable air compressors manufactured today might be helpful.
First up is a company called Campbell Hausfeld. This is a company that prides itself in their product line. And they should. They produce a nice range of air compressors over a wide range of prices and options. Their basic 1 gallon pancake type unit is perfect for inflating air mattresses, air brushing, or using a brad nailer or other small tool. This unit also packs quite a value into a small space. For just over a hundred bucks you get the compressor, a 25 foot recoil hose, a needle and adaptor, 2 inflation nozzles and the air chuck. It also has a handle for easy portability. Just plug it in, let it pressure up to where you set the gauge, and use. When you are done just turn the pit cock and release any extra pressurized air from the tank. This is important because it lets moisture out of the tank so it doesn't rust the inside away. This is a great unit for use around the home.
Another company you have probably already heard of that produces some really great air compressors is Powermate. They use both a Briggs and Stratton Intek gas engine as well as a Honda OHV engine. These are a jump in price, but as in everything else in life, you tend to get what you pay for. For between $800-$1200 you can get a 4 to 8 gallon unit that will provide the capacity and pressure you need for bigger jobs than the smaller pancake compressors allow you to have. These are really contractor grade machines meant for heavier and more continuous use. Liquid filled pressure gauges and brass cross fittings suit a unit with Swedish stainless reed valves and automotive style ball bearings. If you do roofing, siding, or other construction, then you can't go wrong with one of Powermate's air compressors.
Finally, Jenny Products puts out some really nice mid range air compressors that are second to none. A 1.5 gallon to 4 gallon unit will run you around $600. Some have single tanks and others come with two. If you run a roofing gun for long you'll be happy to have that second tank. Otherwise the thing keeps turning on and can get really annoying.
There are lots of portable air compressors on the market over quite a price range. Be bold when it comes to purchasing one and you'll never regret it. It's money well spent.

How should I disinfect my betta's tank after a case of dropsy?
Well, to make a long story short, my betta, Jack Frost Pancake, died last night from dropsy. It was awful to watch him go and I really miss him. But anyway, I would like to get another betta soon and I obviously don't want him or her to get sick. The aquarium is 5 gallons and there is currently an apple snail in there so I don't want the tank to be out of service for too long. Once it's been cleaned, do I have to re-cycle it? Thank you. ![]()
Sorry, my mistake, it was actually two nights ago when he died. I was at a sleepover last night and my perception of time is slightly muddled.
The best thing you can do is syphon the gravel and get as much waste food out,change the water and use a surface filter/aearator and keep the temperature a steady 70f.
Read below about dropsy.

Garden Arbor Plans - 5 Keys To Building The Perfect Arbor
If you've decided to add an arbor to your garden, you've made a great decision. Arbors lend structure to an overall landscape design, and they're also a great way to create a focal point in your garden, drawing the observer's eye where you want it to go. If you've decided to build your own arbor, the next step is probably going to be picking out a set of plans. However, if you don't have a lot of experience with building plans, this step can be difficult. How do you know that you're choosing the best design for your yard? In this article, we'll explore five keys to choosing the right plan and building an arbor that's perfectly suited to your needs.
1. Think in terms of scale.
Building an arbor of the appropriate size is very important. When choosing plans, consider the overall scale of your garden or the specific area where the arbor will be located. Just as you wouldn't want a very small arbor dwarfed by an enormous deck, you also wouldn't want a mammoth 10 or 12 foot tall garden arbor in line with a 3 foot tall picket fence.
2. Consider the architecture of your home.
Styles and designs of garden arbors are as varied as the architecture of our homes. You'll want to pick something that works with the style of your home, not against it. For example, if you live in a Tuscan style home, you wouldn't want a craftsman-style arbor in your yard. Instead, you'd want to look for something with a Mediterranean feel to it.
3. What will the arbor's purpose be?
Some garden arbors are simply there for looks, while others serve a utilitarian purpose. When looking at plans, be sure to consider what your arbor's purpose will be. Do you want something with a bench seat underneath to create a cozy garden nook for reading or relaxing? Or does your arbor need to be built with a gate underneath, so it can fit in line with a fence and mark the entry point to a yard or garden? Whatever its purpose will be, make sure you take this into account as you look at building plans.
4. Choose the right type of wood.
Because garden arbors are exposed to the elements, choosing the right type of wood is critical. You don't want to put many hours of labor and love into building a beautiful arbor, only for it to start falling apart a few years later. Generally speaking, redwoods are the preferred building material for outdoor structures like arbors. Red cedar, for example, is naturally resistant to weather decay and insect infestations. Steer clear of pine; while it may be less expensive, it won't hold up in the long run. Treated wood can work well, though it's not the best choice if your arbor will be located in close proximity to garden plants. The chemicals in the wood can poison and kill some plants.
5. Don't bite off more than you can chew.
Last but not least, don't try to tackle a project that's too difficult for you. If you don't have much woodworking experience or aren't extremely confident in your building skills, then don't choose a complex set of plans. As a general rule of thumb, shy away from plans that require difficult joinery methods such as mortise and tenon joints. If all else fails, consider buying a ready to assemble kit. Arbor kits come in hundreds of designs, shapes, and sizes, and can easily be ordered online or though specialty catalogs.

My riding mowerused to shut down automatically when I got up. Now it keeps running and the key cant turn itoff
The mower is a Sears Craftsman 13.5 HP mower. The only way I can turn the mower off is to disconnect the spark plug while the engine is running. I checked all the connections and it still won't shut down. It won't even shut down when I turn the key to the off position. Can someone please tell me what I need to do to fix this?? Thanks, Chris
The seat safety switch and the off position on the key both ground out the ignition system to kill the engine. If you have your owners Manuel, check out the wiring for these circuits. The ground connection is not being made. Both switches are not going to go bad at the same time.

Plastic and Fiberglass Blowers and Fans by Canada Blower
Canada Blower Co. is a major supplier of plastic and fiberglass fans and blowers for industry applications where aggressive media must be moved. Plastic fans include polypropelene, PVC, PVDF, fire retardant and UV resistant PPs.
Applications for Corrosion and Chemical Resistant Fans include:
* University, Medical Research, Defence Labs, Fume Hoods OEMs, Pharmaceutical Labs
On most campuses there is a certain number of fume hoods that are used for various acids testing to break down materials for analysis. HCl and Perchloric Acid are the ones used most commonly. Fume hoods and Chemical resistant fans are needed.
* High Technology Semiconductors, PCBs, and Photonics
Chip makers use acids to clean metal before they mount thin film on the metal upon which they lay circuitry.
* Printed Circuit Board Industry
FRP fans are frequenly used for clean rooms.
* Waste water and Sewage Treatment Plants
Hydrogen Sulfide builds up (H2S) in sewage plant facilities and causes an odor problem that has to be treated. Depending on the size of these stations corrosion resistant fans are needed. This gas can also be very volatile and will require explosion proof motor and static grounding of the fan housing by graphite impregnation that Canada Blower can provide too.
* Salt Air and High Humidity Environments
Any facility near the salt air is also a good place for plastic fans and the humidity will eat through metal fans.
* Steel and Wire Manufacturing
As the steel comes in and sits at these plants impurities and scale develop on the steel or the wire that needs to be cleaned off before the wire or steel can be properly worked with. Acid baths are needed for this and the corrosive fumes coming off these aced baths are highly corrosive...
* Stainless Steel and other Metal Production Facilities
In tha annealing and Pickling process acid baths are used to strip scale off the steel after the annealing process that smoothed out grain patterns that may have formed during the annealing process. Later on acids are used again to support oxidation.
* Chenical and Petrochemical Industries
* Jet Engine and Power Plant Turbine Manufacturing or Servicing
Molted Salt tanks are often used here to descale metals coming out of hot furnaces. Pickling and cleaning of titanium which is used in Jet engine parts also utilize acid baths as does nickel plating.
* Electroplating and Metal Finishing
These industries use fiberglass fans and fume scrubbers.
* Scrubber OEMs and Designers
FRP fans are standard components in fiberglass srubber designs.
* Industrial Galvanizers
* Printing Press Service Shops
* Chromatography
* Food Processing
Often in the food processing industry they wash equipment down with acids and other corrosives. Also they use fans for the humidity that builds up from the drying process of foods.
* Pulp and Paper Industry
Pulp and paper manufacturers are very wide users of fiberglass and other plastics fans for their boilers, exhaust and filtration systems.
Canada Blower fans are the finest quality blowers available for efficient movement of corrosive, humid, or polluted air, gases, and fumes. These fire-retardant and corrosion-resistant plastic fans are specially designed and especially suited for hostile applications where coated metal blowers typically corrode. Cnada Blower fans are proven thoughout the world and clearly recognized for superior quality, reliability, and efficiency.
High-efficiency impellers result in low power consumption, operating costs, and quieter operation. All metal hardware is completely sealed from exposure to corrosion by incapsulating into FRP or plastic; the steel support frame and motor base are powder coated with a corrosion-resistant finish. In addition to being highly resistant to chemical corrosion, PP fans are self-extinguishing and will not support combustion.
Canada Blower fiberglass fans housings are manufactured from premium grade, fire resistant resins that provide excellent corrosion resistance in most chemical environments. Canada Blower FRP impellers are made of premium vinyester that combines corrosion resistance with structural integrity under the stress of rotation.
Tough applications mean tough fans and blowers by Canada Blower. Canada Blower is a world wide distributor of industrial process ans OEM fans and blowers, as well as fan / blower components; including high pressure blowers, high temperature fans, spark resistant and explosion proof ventilators, tubeaxial and vaneaxial high pressure ventilators. Canada Blower also does existing fans and blowers repairs, re-build, as well as dynamical wheels balancing.

MG ZR 04, got oil in my water and no heat from blower? head gasket?
is this signs of my headgasket starting to go? i have air coming thru my heater but its cold. I also had brown gunge when bleeding the water, (like brown toothpaste) if it is my head gasket, how much (rougly) will it cost to put in a new one? i Bought one already for 30£ just incase! Note that my engine hasnt completley gone just the warmth from the heaters and dirty water
Your engine will be completely gone soon if you keep driving it like that. Water is not good for bearings or rings.
If you put the new gasket in, the biggest mistake people make on those is not using new head bolts. They stretch pretty far when you tighten them and won't put the right amount of pressure on the gasket more than once. Few people realize that you get less clamping force with the same torque every time you take a bolt close to the limit. And you need that lightweight head to be perfect.

Carb Mixture
Carb Mixture

Low-carb Pastry Pizzazz
This delicious treat adds only 1.9 grams of carb for a Superb Roll of any size. Just add a glaze to the rolls once they are baked. While the rolls are baking, make ½ or ¼ of the below mentioned glaze. Apply the glaze thinly with a pastry brush to the tops of the hot rolls. It will set within minutes. The rolls will freeze well, even with the glaze. Thaw at room temperature or follow directions for heating in the oven.
Glaze
SERVING SIZE, icing for 1 cookie. Carbs per serving 0.5 gram of carb.
Number of servings: 28
Ingredients:
1 egg white (or 3 Tablesps sterilized egg white)
1 cup powdered sugar (unsifted)
3 Teasps vanilla extract
Put the egg white and powdered sugar in the bowl of your electric mixer and beat on high speed until the sugar is absorbed and the mixture thickens a bit: scrape sides of bowl as needed. Mix in the vanilla extract. Apply icing with the tip of a knife or a small brush. The icing dries quickly, particularly over freshly baked cookies, rolls, and so forth. Store unused frosting, covered, in the fridge. Always stir well before using.
Ingredients:
A. ¾ cup cold water plus 2 Tablesps (very important)
B.
C. 6 Tablesps butter (¾ stick)
D.
E. ¾ cup vital wheat gluten flour
F.
G. 1/3 cup unbleached, all-purpose wheat (white) flour
H.
I. Trace of salt (two light shakes or to taste)
J.
K. 3 eggs *
L.
M. 1 egg white
Preheat oven to 420F. Have ready one large, nonstick, heavy-gauge metal cookie sheet. Put the water and the butter in a heavy 2-quart saucepan, preferably with a rounded bottom, over medium heat. Occasionally stir the mixture while you wait for the butter to melt. Meanwhile, thoroughly combine the two flours, and a pinch of salt in a medium-mixing bowl.
As soon as the butter has melted and the mixture begins to simmer, add the dry mix all at once, and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon. Within just a few seconds, the dough will become smooth and leave the bottom and sides of the pan. Keep stirring until no flour shows. Cook for about 10 seconds longer and remove from heat.
Put the hot saucepan on a cold burner or other safe surface. Stir in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. At first the dough will appear lumpy. When the whole eggs have been added, the dough will be smooth. It should be creamy and hold peaks with almost no settling. Work in the egg white. Now the dough will be just right; it will still hold its shape, but in softer peaks. It should form mounds that do not spread on the cookie sheet, but sink back and broaden out slightly. Occasionally, you may need to make a judgment call. Depending on the size of the eggs, the dough may be sufficiently soft even before you add the final egg white. The right consistency makes the best rolls. Dough that is too stiff results in smaller rolls; dough that is too soft (i.e., spreads out wide on the cookie sheet) may result in flat rolls.
If you like, use your electric mixer to work in the eggs. Simply transfer the hot dough from the saucepan to the mixer bowl and beat in the eggs, one at a time. Do not over beat because if you do, the rolls may develop large air pockets. Use a flat beater if you have one. Put spoonfuls of dough on the cookie sheet, choosing the size you prefer. Use large Teacups or even soupspoons to drop the dough. Place them fairly close together.
Bake the rolls for about 25 to 28 minutes or until they are golden brown and crusty on top. Promptly freeze rolls that you do not plan to use the day they are baked. Take them out of the bag to thaw at room temperature. You can also put the frozen rolls in the oven, set at 350F (no need to pre-heat), and bake for 5 minutes. You can toast rolls (slice in half), but you need a wide-slot toaster or toaster oven. The rolls toast rapidly, so use the lowest setting. Save unused rolls in a dry place until rock hard. They will be used for Magnificent Bread

Auto Air Filters Are Going Green
When I explain to someone that there are several lines of vehicle air filters available that are environmentally sound I usually receive a quizzical look back from that person. For some motorists the idea of environmentally compatible automotive parts is a foreign concept to them. Yet, when you think about it many parts that come standard on just about any vehicle qualifies for that title. A catalytic converter is one part that everyone knows about, even if they don't understand exactly how one works. So, exactly what is an environmentally sound air filter? Let's take a closer look for all the details.
As you probably know the air filter that comes with your car is made predominately of paper with plastic molding holding the filter together. If you change the air filter at recommended intervals - once a year is common - you can easily go through 3, 5, or even 10 or more air filters depending on how long you keep your car as well as how many miles you put on your car. All of these air filters end up in your trash and then go straight to the dump. The paper in the filter will probably disintegrate quickly, but the plastic sits in place perhaps for thousands of years.
If this sort of thing disturbs you then take heart. Thanks to race car technology, manufacturers have developed reusable air filters for many production vehicles. If you purchase one for your vehicle it likely will be the last one you ever need. How is that? Because a reusable air filter can be cleaned and put back in your car over and over again. In fact, quality reusable air filters are designed to outlast your car with many guaranteed to last 500,000 miles or more, even up to one million miles!
A reusable air filter costs more, with prices running approximately 2-4 times the price of a standard air filter. If you keep your car for any length of time you will get that money back, but if do not you are still helping to show environmental responsibility by keeping our landfills free of unnecessary throw away parts.
Two additional benefits of a reusable air filter -- the type that K&N and other top manufacturers produce -- is that it will give your vehicle a boost in horsepower as your engine will run more efficiently. Furthermore, a more efficient engine burns less fuel so your fuel economy goes up too.
So, what is there not to like about a reusable air filter? In reality, not much! By installing a reusable [or performance] air filter you help the environment, realize a noticeable gain in horsepower, and you burn less fuel. A true win-win-win proposition, don't you agree?

What does auto cool mean in the operation of an air conditioner?
When turning on the air conditioner, you have the option to choose auto cool. What is this function for since there's the thermostat regulates the on/off of the compressor?
Most heat pump a/c systems have an auto option. This means if you turn the temperature to 25oC (77 F) it will distinguish if it requires to heat your room or cool it, as well as adjust your fan speed & vanes (although most have auto fan & vane options anyway). So I would imagine the button you state is this.
However, a long time ago I remember a cooling only A/C that had an auto function on it. It was a button to press on the remote & it brought the a/c down to a comfortable temperature according to how low the ambient temperature was. I thought it was a good idea, but i've never seen it since.
Also, is the button you state on the remote? I ask because on most wall mounts under the front cover there is a button (some which state auto), this is if you loose your remote. There are some a/c wall mounts that have a small tab which you can select between 'test', 'auto', and 'fan', again these options are if you loose the remote (test is for the engineer).
Hope that helps

Crossbed Truck Tool Boxes
The crossbed truck tool box is the most popular style of truck bed tool boxes. I see more of these boxes on the road then any other. Crossbed boxes have more storage space then most other pickup truck tool boxes. They also come in a variety of styles and designs to fit nearly anyones needs.
The most common truck bed box is the single lid box. This crossbed design has one single lid with two latches to open the lid from either side of your truck. These boxes can range in price from under $200 to around $600.
The two lid crossbed truck tool box is another common style. These boxes open from either side of your truck. They are priced about the same as the single lid. Remember there are many manufacturers of all these crossbed boxes, so take your
time and look around.
There's many manufacturers of these boxes. Some of the most popular companys are Dee Zee, Delta, and Deflecta-Sheld. Crossbed boxes are available in aluminum, steel, and plastic. They can also be bought as a low profile box, which is not as
tall as a standard crossbed box. The low profile box allows better visibility through the rear window, and a less obvious look to your truck bed.
If you'd like your crossbed box to be easily removable, there's some new products that can make that happen. There are some new manufacturers that make truck boxes on a rail system so you can slide your crossbed box from the front to the rear of
your bed. There are also installation systems that allow you to easily fasten your box to the truck bed, so you won't need a single tool to remove it.
Whatever style you choose, make sure to look for the best deal. Don't forget the shipping costs either. Some online retailers have free shipping for any of their truck boxes. Freight charges will apply to any truck box purchase without free shipping, so look for free shipping before you buy.

Quality of Craftsman Tool Boxes? ?
I have always used Craftsman Tool Boxes, a firm believer that they were the best. Now I am getting a vibe that Mac and Snap-on have surpassed Craftsman a long time ago and that a lot of Craftsman stuff is crap (besides hand tools) am I right?
I was taking a look at the Armstrong Tool Boxes and was told that these are compared to Mac, any truth to this?
You get what you pay for.
All major tool manufactures have such a small markup on their products.
You will pay for quality in the form of what the items cost.
Many tools and their scale of quality(besides cost) are based on who uses them, for what and the duration of use.
A professional mechanic who uses tools all day will notice the quality of Snap-on and Mac tools compared to Craftsman. A regular user will be just fine buying Craftsman. (readily available and priced right)

Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason
The best horror games can make you shiver, but few elicit chills as well as Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason. This is partially due to the tense atmosphere that slowly thickens as you play, inspiring a general unease that eventually escalates into full-blown panic. But it's also due to its icy Arctic setting, where the freezing air can choke your lungs and heat is the most valuable of commodities. The unforgiving blizzards of the North Pole inspire Cryostasis on multiple levels, from a heavy, deliberate pace akin to wading through drifts of snow, to multiple gameplay mechanics that keep you forever at odds with the cold. This innovative first-person adventure is not for everyone; its slow tempo will numb players seeking instant gratification, and occasional performance and stability issues may frustrate. But Cryostasis has a way of keeping you in its thrall, pushing you forward to see what frosty secrets lie ahead.
6208480None
The game doesn't give you much in the way of exposition, ushering you into the frozen tundra by way of a seemingly unrelated voice-over about a tribe of forest dwellers seeking refuge within the wildwood. This tale evolves during the game through a series of scattered parchments, though its meanings and metaphors are slow to unfold--much like the main narrative. It's not immediately clear as you start your initial explorations where you are and why you're there, though the raging blizzard and lifeless bodies strewn around indicate that you aren't apt to encounter many friendly faces. Eventually the framework becomes more apparent: You are on a nuclear-powered icebreaker whose crew has befallen an unusual tragedy, though the glacial crash that seems the most likely cause is only one piece in an increasingly complex puzzle. It's a great mystery, and the gradual flow of information will keep you guessing--and keep you tethered to your screen.
The story is uncovered in flashbacks, but these recollections aren't just plot morsels that exist outside of the gameplay. Rather, you relive key moments as you encounter the scattered corpses of crew members. When you discover bodies, you're transported back in time to witness important events that eventually coalesce into a meaningful narrative, and you do so through the eyes of the poor soul you've discovered. However, you aren't always just a powerless witness; in many cases, you must actively change the circumstances of the past to affect the present. This mechanic manifests itself in different ways and leads to some of the game's most memorable moments. For example, by piloting an undersea vessel through some murky waters within one sinister flashback, you conduct repairs that then remove obstacles in the present. In another case, you'll make a quick jump before icy waters plunge into the room and wash you away.
Reliving this victim's past transforms the present.
In fact, many of these "mental echoes" involve saving the victim's life, and often require a bit of trial and error as you jump into the past and figure out which actions lead to success. Try-and-try-again gameplay can be an annoyance in other games, but in Cryostasis, these conundrums take on a classic adventure-game feel with successful results. The puzzles involved aren't overly difficult, but you may need to make a few attempts to complete them without succumbing to environmental hazards, like suffocating smoke and rising water levels. Should you fail, you're transported to the present without penalty. Should you succeed, your surroundings change and usher you toward more mystery.
However, Cryostasis isn't always so forgiving. You may find a lurching fiend awaiting you when you return to the present, and the best way to communicate with such flesh demons is with an axe to the head or a shotgun blast to the belly. These enemies aren't the smartest bunch, but they can inflict a lot of damage, so every shot you fire must count. This is partially because your weapons aren't built for speed; like every facet of the game, slaying your lumbering enemy is a measured affair. The axe, your close-combat mainstay, feels remarkably heavy, and the camera sways forcibly when you swing as if to reinforce that notion. Ranged weapons can be just as ponderous, often devastatingly so. Reload times are incredibly long, and the camera bob that signifies recoil with some weapons is dramatic. The sense of impact doesn't always match up with these effects, which can make combat cross the line from "heavy" to "needlessly clunky." Nevertheless, pelting a blowtorch-wielding brute with flares and watching it panic as it burns to death is satisfying. On the other hand, trying to use the Mosin rifle and its infuriatingly blurry scope won't lead to similar glee.
The occasionally awkward combat doesn't thaw the frigid tension, thankfully, and scare attempts hit more often than they miss. Some encounters are predictable, such as those that follow your haunting visits to the past. However, most of them still manage to shock, thanks to clever uses of slamming doors, scurrying beasts, and good old-fashioned surprise appearances, complete with flickering lights and high-pitched ambient chords. Far-off clatters, your character's heavy breathing and occasional wheezing, and the churning, clanging machinery juxtapose well and generate tension on a broad scale. Frequent silences make the excellent sound design even more effective by making it unpredictable, just as the tense lulls between enemy attacks make those encounters seem all the more vicious. Cryostasis is legitimately scary, because death's cold embrace seems perpetually close at hand.
The flare gun isn't your best offensive tool, but it sure buys you precious time.
There is limited solace to be had in the various heat sources found on the vessel. Burning torches, flaming debris, and even desk lamps not only provide visual warmth, but also let you replenish your health reserves. Your health meter is dynamic, given that it is affected both by taking damage in combat and by the chill that permeates the Arctic. Although the standard levels of cold won't kill you, they will keep your health meter practically empty, and a few short jaunts through superchilled fogs can easily be fatal. This mechanic is not only a cool idea on its own, but also enhances the tension and general sense of chilled danger, because the effects of the cold directly impact gameplay. The only drawback to this system is that every so often, it foreshadows enemy encounters, which sometimes occur shortly after you discover heating elements.
As you crawl through the tight corridors, you may occasionally experience a sense of deja vu, but that's a product of the setting rather than of uncreative design. In fact, as the tale evolves, so too do the environments that you explore. Just as the frosty hallways start to wear down your resolve, Cryostasis will introduce a new area, often via a grainy mental echo that recounts the eerie events of the past before you explore the same now-decrepit environs in the present. Some of these locales are constructed well, such as a room with a large reactor that looks far different in the present than it does when you first explore it via flashback episode. But no matter which region of the ship you're traversing, you'll feel perpetually frostbitten. Flakes of frost waft down from above, undulating sheets of ice crystals cover walls and machinery, and when you're exposed to full blasts of the arctic tempest, the roar of the wind will deafen you whilst the rush of snow and ice blinds you.
Pro tip: Pack a blanket.
The water and ice effects are quite good, as are the lighting and shadows. Flickering lights and icy reflections set up the scares, but these touches aren't used so often that they lose their edge. Additionally, though not always perfectly smooth, good animations bring characters to life, human and nonhuman alike. Yet though the graphics engine projects the right mood, it is somewhat dated. Textures are greatly lacking in detail, and some jagged edges and blocky geometry make Cryostasis look uneven. Despite that, the graphics technology has a difficult time keeping up. The game is prone to major fits of slowdown, even on machines that greatly exceed its minimum requirements, which is a head-scratcher in a game that clearly doesn't push the limits of modern technology. We also experienced a couple of crashes, though the experience was otherwise mostly bug-free. The frame-rate difficulties usually lead to only minor annoyances, though they can be a bit more frustrating when they occur in the midst of combat.
These visual issues aside, Cryostasis's measured exploration and sense of frigid tension make it an experience unlike any other. Additionally, the flashback and health-replenishment mechanics aren't just interesting on their own, but also enhance the atmosphere and give weight to the enigmatic tale as it slowly unfolds. If you need the constant stimulation of flying bullets and sprays of blood, Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason likely won't inspire you. But if you appreciate slow-burning suspense, this adventure will keep you glued to the monitor to uncover the secrets buried deep within the inhospitable tundra of the Arctic circle.

Webcam help ?
I just installed a webcam to my PC yesterday and it's not good.
The display flares and the lag is awful. My pc isn't slow and my graphics card is good. I am not low on memory etc either. It's running Windows XP.
What I would like to know is have I just picked a crappy camera ( it's not new it used to belong to my kids) or is this typical performance ?
Do I add "Decent webcam" on to my Christmas wish list now ?
If you have dial-up - don't even bother. I find Logitech cams are the easiest. XP even has drivers for some of them so you dont' even need the software. If you don't need bells & whistles, don't buy a fancy one. I have had my Logitech 3000 for about 5 years and it's great....Got my sons 2 Logitech quickcams at BJs and they work as well.
