Stair Lift Specs
Stair lift Specs.
Of the three common alternatives for providing access between floors (residential elevators, stair lifts or stair lifts, and platform lifts) the stair lift is by far the least expensive option.
Straight stair lifts range in price from 2.5k - 4k, and between 4k - 15k for retrofitted curved models. As the complexity of the stair design increases so will the installation costs. Curved rail lifts require a highly detailed on-site survey prior to order and can take up to 3 months to be built and delivered.
Stair Lift Specifics - Special Thanks to www.StairLiftExchange.com for an awesome website that features different types of stair lifts.
Drive Type - There are 4 types of Stair lift drives that are available for consumer purchase.
- Cable - Most cable drive systems use a strong steel cable, the kind used in elevators, to advance the passenger. Some have said that cable drive stair lifts don't have smooth starts and stops but it really depends on the model.
- Chain - Usually only used for heavy duty models. Can be loud at times.
- Screw - The lifting mechanism used is a screw driven actuator, which is powered by a rechargeable battery.
- Rack & Pinion - Users ride is smooth and controlled. Speed can be set by installer. Rack and pinion (meaning gear and teeth). The systems must be cleaned and lubricated regularly to prevent damage to the components. Gear teeth can be hazardous, especially to children, but most models have hidden gears.
Many manufacturers have discontinued their cable, chain, and screw drive systems, with the exception of their heavy duty models. Rack & pinion are the one's mostly used today. However, Drum and Cable systems are amazing too!
Rail / Track - The track used with a stair lift is secured to the stairs. Steel and aluminum are the primary metals used in manufacturing the tracks. Steel is often used for custom engineered applications, where as Aluminum is typically found in straight applications because of its lighter weight and interchangeability.
Power - Most Stair lifts today are powered by batteries or a domestic mains supply. Either AC (mains supply) or DC powered (battery). AC powered units use a trailing mains cable that is said to be less reliable than the DC battery powered units. Furthermore, the trailing cable needs to be reeled out and reeled back in, each and every time the stair lift travels up and down the stairway. AC powered units can be recharged anywhere along the track, whereas DC powered units can only be recharged at the base stations at the top and bottom of the stairs. There are several states where they prohibit the installation of AC powered equipment unless you are a fully qualified electrician.
There are two types of Station Charging:
- Static Charging - consists of permanent charging stations positioned at each end of the rail.
- Flexible Charging - allows the charging stations to be moved anywhere on the rail.
Swivel Seat - To safely access the upper landing of the stairs, one must swivel the stair lift seat onto the landing. A lock release lever allows the seat to turn. Some seats have a single or dual release arms.
There are two types of swivel seats:
- 90° Swivel Seat - This type of swivel seat is mounted on the upstairs side of the chassis and fold in one direction.
- 180° Swivel Seat - This model folds in both directions.
Diagnostics - Many newer stair lifts offer a self diagnostic system that can help diagnose problems with your lift and decrease maintenance costs.
Accessories - There are a number of accessories available to complement your Stair Lift. These accessories are great for individuals with additional mobility difficulties and/or more complex stair configurations.
- Sit and Stand Frame - Allows the passenger to choose between sitting and standing.
- Seatbelts - Great safety feature with offered in either belt or shoulder strap.
- Hinged Rail - Allows the railing to be moved from the bottom of the stairs.
- Bridging Platform - Used for curved staircases at the top of the landing.
- Power Folding Footrest - For individuals that have a hard time bending down.
- Power Swivel Seat - Automatically turns the seat for effortless entry and exit.
Installation - Many stair lifts are manufactured so they can be easily installed. Some individuals decide to install it themselves while others prefer to have them installed by the manufacturer. Most stair lift manufacturers will have measurement and installation guides readily available on their websites and are very helpful if you have any questions.
More information: For more information you can visit: www.StairLiftExchange.com and choose from all different types of stair lifts.

A building contractor wants to lift 25 sections of steel pipe together each 10 m long. The pipe is
stamped “50 kg/m”.
(a) How much force (in SI units) must the crane by capable of lifting?
(b) If the crane lifts this to the top of a building 30 m high, what is the amount of work done in SI
units.
(c) If this is done in 10 seconds, what is the power in SI units
Could you answer each part?
Answers --
(a) Force = 122,625 N
(b) Work = 3,678,750 N-m (also could be expressed with the unit Joule (J), with same number )
(c) Power = 367,875 W
Where to begin before doing anything else:
Given 25 pieces of pipe, each 10 m long
length = 25 pipe * 10 m = 250 m of pipe
To find the mass multiply length by the given "stamp"
250 m * (50 kg / m) = 12,500 kg
m = 12,500 kg
(a) Using gravity = 9.81 m/s^2 and Newton's 2nd Law
F = m * a
F = (12,500 kg) * (9.81 m/s^2)
F = 122,625 N
(b) Work = Force * Displacement
W = F * d
W = (122,625 N) * (30 m)
W = 3,678,750 N-m
(c) time = 10 s
Power = Work / Time
P = W / t
P = (3,678,750 N-m) / (10 s)
P = 367,875 W

Oil Heating
Oil Heating

Processed Oils And Trans Fats
By now everyone knows that hydrogenated fats and partially hydrogenated fats are very bad. They change when heated. We call the new fat configurations trans fats. Our bodies have the worst time processing them. They are like poison to body functions. The food industry has listened and you find less use of these oils, but they are still being used. Always check the label of processed foods to make sure they don’t contain these oils. Even better, avoid processed foods and fast foods altogether.
Trans fats are from vegetable oils that denature while heating. That’s why we call them ‘trans’ fats. They transform into something worse. Food manufacturers use them because they prolong the shelf life of foods. Not only do these fatty oils cause an accumulation of bad cholesterol (LDL), but they wipe out good cholesterol (HDL). They also wreak havoc on insulin, preventing it from bonding to glucose (sugar) molecules so it can be utilized by the cells, leading to obesity and diabetes. To maintain proper pH, the body can’t let these molecules just keep floating around; fat is created to store these unutilized molecules.
Don’t confuse these fats with all fats. There are fats our bodies do need. We call these essential fatty acids. Fats containing omega 3 fatty acids, such as in flaxseed and borage seeds, are good fats. Our body needs them to function at optimal efficiency. Doctors recommend supplementing with Omega 3 oils for patients with cholesterol issues. They work wonders to help control bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol.
Omega 6 fatty acids and omega 9 fatty acids are also necessary fats. Vegetable oils like olive oil, sesame seed oil and sunflower seed oil often used for cooking and in salad dressings provide all we need of these fats. In fact, Americans consume an estimated 26 times the omega 6 and omega 9 oils we need from the overuse of these oils.
To avoid trans fats and the over-consumption of fats, you should avoid cooking oils as a rule of thumb. If you like to cook like Food Network cooks, you are definitely consuming way too many fats. They lavish their dishes with oil to excess. Do not cook with oil! Do not fry! Do not deep fry! Do not sautee! When you heat oil it denatures the oil, changing its chemical makeup. This is true of even olive oil. There is some change in the natural chemistry of the fats in the oil. Plus, anything in excess is never good for you.
If you simply must use oil in cooking and frying, consider using virgin coconut oil. It is the only oil that does not denature no matter the heating temperature. It is also the only truly natural oil. It naturally separates from coconut milk and the coconut meat. It is 100% natural. It has so many healthy benefits and is good for you. I use it instead of butter and margarine for buttering a potato or toast, for baking healthy cookies and for salad dressing. Interestingly it is solid until about 80 degrees, so you have to heat it slightly to use it as salad dressing.
In summary, oils provide essential minerals to our diet. Except for virgin coconut oil, cooking with oils causes even the healthiest of vegetable oils to denature, or change their chemical composition, as the oil heats. For some oils this leads to the oils transforming to very unhealthy trans fats wreaking havoc to our bodies. When we are conscious of the foods we eat and the fats we consume we will begin to see positive transformations in our health.

Is it better to have fixed heating oil price?
Petro offers a one year service with a choice of having heating oil fixed at $2.939 per gallon or one that fluctuates and is currently 2.779 but has a ceiling of 3.109 and can't get higher? Which will be better?
It is a good deal to have a fixed heating oil price because of the constantly rising prices. But sometimes there are contracts and things that may get you into trouble. Some people sign contracts for, lets say, 100 barrels at that price. they pay the company in advance at that fixed price. But sometimes the prices rise so high that the companys cant stay with just what you paid on the contract. The company goes out of business, then youre out of money and the rest of the oil for the season. It sucks. ill try to find the article for you.

Physiotherapy of Your Shoulder
The function of the human arm is to allow placement of the hand in useful positions so the hands can perform activities where the eyes can see them. Because of the huge range of positions required the shoulder is very flexible with a large motion range, but this is at the expense of some reduced strength and greatly reduced stability. A "soft tissue joint" is often a description of the shoulder, indicating it is the tendons, muscles and ligaments which are important to the joint's function. Shoulder treatment and rehabilitation is a core physiotherapy skill.
The shoulder joint is constructed from the socket of the scapula and the humeral head, the ball at the top of the upper arm bone. The head of the upper arm is a large ball and important tendons insert onto it to move and stabilise the shoulder, but the shoulder socket, the glenoid, is small in comparison and very shallow. A cartilage rim, the labrum of the glenoid, deepens the socket and adds to stability. The acromio-clavicular joint lies above the shoulder joint proper and provides dynamic stability during arm movements, being made up from part of the scapula and the outer end of the clavicle.
The major stability and flexibility joints of the upper limb shoulder girdle are the scapulothoracic and glenohumeral joints and these joints are held steady and moved by large and powerful muscles. The pectoralis major and latissimus dorsi muscles stabilise and perform strong movements, the serratus anterior stabilises the scapula on the thorax, the rotator cuff stabilises the humeral head on the socket and the deltoid and other muscles perform movements. The shoulder blade and thorax need to be kept in a stable relationship for the glenohumeral joint to perform precise and controlled movements.
Around the shoulder all the muscles narrow down into flat, fibrous tendons, some larger and stronger, some thinner and weaker. All these tendons are anchoring themselves to the humeral head, allowing their muscles to act on the shoulder. The rotator cuff includes a group of relatively small shoulder muscles, the subscapularis, the supraspinatus, the infraspinatus and the teres minor. The tendons form a wide sheet over the ball, allowing muscle forces to act on it. The rotator cuff, despite its name, acts to hold the humeral head down on the socket and allow the more powerful muscles to perform shoulder movements.
With age, small degenerative tears occur in the tendons of the cuff, in some cases painful and in others not, causing loss of movement and strength. As tears progress they can become massive, cutting off the cuff muscle power from the humeral head and severely reducing function. Rotator cuff strengthening work is performed by physiotherapists and if the tears are severe they concentrate on anterior deltoid strength to improve functional ability in the absence of cuff power. Shoulder surgeons can repair many rotator cuff tears and physiotherapists rehabilitate patients following the shoulder protocols.
Osteoarthritis (OA) more commonly affects the hips and the knees, however the shoulder can be severely affected in which cases physiotherapy can help with advice, mobilisation of the joints and work on strength and joint motion. Once physiotherapy treatment has been tried then total shoulder replacement is the only remaining treatment option, surgical replacement occurring of the head of the arm bone and the socket of the shoulder blade. As the shoulder is referred to as a "soft-tissue joint" it is the balance and strength of the tendons, muscles and ligaments that determines a good outcome for the replacement. Physiotherapists closely follow the surgical protocols to get the optimal results.
Physiotherapists treat many other types of shoulder problems such as impingement, tendinitis, hypermobility, abnormal muscle patterning, fractures and dislocations. Impingement is treated by strengthening the rotator cuff or by subacromial injection or acromioplasty operation, where the end of the acromion can be excised. Tendinitis is treated by direct treatment of the tendon and graded strengthening and hypermobility by stability work and accepting the limitations dictated by the condition. Abnormal muscle patterning is managed by teaching normal patterns functionally and fractures and dislocations by the protocols laid down by the surgeons and trauma physiotherapists.

Is it bad to sleep with my knees inverted?
when I sleep I sleep on my front with my hips and knees turned in, so I'm sleeping on the outsides of my knees
if it helps or makes a difference, I've dislocated both my kneecaps -- I have shallow knee-sockets and my knees are bad (but it's common, it's not all bad or anything, just sometimes it hurts)
so is this bad?
thanks!
I'm sorry, Sydney, but what does that have to do with my question? And what do you have to do in PT?

The Small Business Owner’s Guide to Zip Ties
Cash register? Check. Employees? Check. Zip Ties? Wait a second. Zip ties were not on the small business checklist. Until now.
Many small business owners are already using zip ties to bundle cords and cables in their stores or home offices. But zip ties have a myriad of uses, offering convenience and affordability in the pursuit of the American dream.
Dry Cleaners
Multiple pieces from the same customer can be secured with a simple zip tie. Cleaners can keep their racks organized and customers can avoid misplacing an item. An extra dose of customer service will keep a store a cut above the rest.
Jewelers
Necklaces, rings, and other accessories are easily fastened to their tags through the use of a zip tie. Lock the tie on the back of the tag. Then cut the excess tie to help display the product with a crisp, sharp presentation.
Florists and Vineyards
Some plants need a little help while they grow. Orchids, grapevines, and the like can be attached to sturdy apparatuses with zip ties. Effective yet inconspicuous, zip ties allow the plant be the main event.
Retail Store Owners
Zip ties make excellent fasteners to hang signs announcing a sale or other announcement. The marvelously robust zip ties aren’t going anywhere soon and neither will store signs.
Farmers
Connecting stall mats, constructing wire chicken cages, bundling tools – the possibilities are endless for the working farm. Zip ties can be used to temporarily replace broken lock on a gate or while preparing loads for the farmers market.
Zip Ties, while humble in appearance and simple in function, are remarkable gizmos that can save small business owners time and money.

How do I change tie rods on a 2001 Saturn SL1?
I don't know what tools are needed for this job. It looks like I need to remove the tires and brakes to get to it. Is this correct? Any help greatly appreciated!
you will need a jack, some kind of tool to take off the lug nuts, such as a 4-way, the tool that comes with your car, an impact wrench with the correct size socket., a pickle fork(this is a tool with a longish handle and it splits at the end to go around the tie rod end or ball joint), and whatever wrench fits the nut on the bottom of the tie rod end.you will also need a hammer.
These are the necessary tools for an outer end, which is the most common problem. if you are replacing the entire tie rod, and not just the end, follow the tie rod up to the rack and pinion.there will be a nut there.this nut unscrews to take the tie rod off.
If it is just an outer end, jack up the vehicle and remove the tire on the correct side of the vehicle. the tie rod end on the vehicle screws onto the tie rod and is secured in place by a nut that is tightened against it. loosen this nut by turning it clockwise, this way the nut moves away from the end. now, take off the nut on the bottom of the tie rod end.there may be a cotter key here.remove that first.once this nut is completely removed, get the pickle fork.try to jam it between the tie rod end and the place it is mounted.once in place, hit the end of the pickle fork handle with a hammer.keep doing this until the end pops out of the hole.now unscrew the end from the tie rod. Leave the nut on the tie rod, as it will keep the alignment close.screw the new end on and put the shaft facing down into the hole.put on and tighten that nut and cotter pin, and tighten the nut on the tie rod against the new end.
You will need to take your car in for an alignment afterwards unless you dont mind putting new tires on it way prematurely
